One year ago, on May 25, George Floyd was killed by the police. The incident sparked a chain of protests against police brutality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, many more lives have been taken by law enforcement officers since George Floyd\u2019s murder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is disheartening to know that many people\u2014especially minorities who have been victims of this abuse for far too long\u2014no longer have faith and trust in the individuals who are here to \u201cprotect and serve\u201d us. Instead many fear the police and wonder who will be their next victim.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the years, law enforcement officers have <\/span>killed<\/span><\/span><\/a> thousands of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does this type of violence continue to occur?<\/span><\/p>\n

In an attempt to reduce police killings, some reform groups believed that diversifying police forces would decrease the number of such incidents but that hasn\u2019t turned out to be entirely true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Department of Justice<\/span><\/span><\/a> said that police officers in Baltimore, Maryland\u2014who are mostly diversified\u2014have participated in misconduct and violation of civilian\u2019s rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another method that was recently implemented was the integration of <\/span>body cameras<\/span><\/span><\/a>. One would think that the likelihood of misconduct would decrease with such measures in place, however, <\/span>studies<\/span><\/span><\/a> have shown that cameras essentially don\u2019t contribute to much of a change in behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t blame people for being scared of the system, they have every right to be. But this is the perfect time to make a change.<\/span><\/p>\n

San Francisco\u2019s police department instituted tighter measures on how force should be exerted in situations. The <\/span>San Francisco Chronicle<\/span><\/span><\/a> mentions<\/span> that through crisis intervention training, the city noticed the use of force by officers has dropped by 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other reform groups suggest that the United States take tips from countries like Canada because their police officers receive <\/span>training to de-escalate<\/span><\/a><\/span> situations. That training has helped police gain trust with the community and decreased the number of killings and use of force abuse cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our government needs to make changes to prevent more of these senseless murders from happening.<\/span><\/p>\n
