{"id":27586,"date":"2021-06-28T13:36:04","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T17:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=27586"},"modified":"2021-07-02T01:15:46","modified_gmt":"2021-07-02T05:15:46","slug":"honors-college-student-manuel-faria-selected-as-point-flagship-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/honors-college-student-manuel-faria-selected-as-point-flagship-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Honors College Student Selected As Point Flagship Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuel Faria, who earned an associate\u2019s degree in biology from the Wolfson Campus Honors College this May, has been selected as a 2021 Point Flagship Scholar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competitive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/point-foundation-announces-2021-flagship-scholarship-recipients-301317503.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">scholarship<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is awarded by the Point Foundation, which seeks to help students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community achieve their academic goals, to twelve undergraduate and eight graduate school students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to financial assistance, honorees receive admissions counseling, a personal mentor that ensures that the student remains on track to transfer, opportunities to participate in programs that develop leadership skills and access to the more than 300 Point Flagship alumni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love social interactions,\u201d Faria said. \u201cI am very extroverted and I want those meaningful connections with people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his time at MDC, Faria served as vice president of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/sharknet.mdc.edu\/organization\/STEMSA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STEM Association<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014where he researched computer science\u2014and president of Model United Nations. He was also selected to attend the prestigious Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria and started an initiative to provide books for children in Miami and Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This May, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/honors-college-graduates-selected-for-university-of-miami-research-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">was selected to participate in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a summer program where MDC students can get research experience at the University of Miami\u2014to research how the mitochondria\u2019s circular DNA affects the aging process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faria will transfer to Stanford University in the fall to study neurobiology and minor in religious studies.
