PHOTO COURTESY OF COLUMBIA RECORDS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As hip-hop searched for an identity, Hill released an album that revived the genre and left aftershocks that can still be felt today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Featuring 16 tracks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encompasses a mix of neo-soul and hip-hop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauryn Hill showcases her rap ability while highlighting her emotional tone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her most popular track <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doo Wop (That Thing)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pushed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miseducation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 shortly after it debuted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the first week of its release, the album sold more than 400,000 copies breaking the record at that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill also broke records at the 41st Grammys with 10 nominations. She won half of them, making her the first female artist to receive five Grammys in one night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of the project, Lauryn Hill shares her journey to self-worth and discovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With features from notable R&amp;B artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryjblige.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mary J. Blige<\/span><\/a> and D\u2019Angelo, it&#8217;s unquestioned that the album broke barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It opens with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intro. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This 47-second track sets the tone with students arriving at a self-love class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It becomes apparent that Lauryn Hill is absent, marking the beginning of her miseducation and letting it be known that self-worth is something she must learn alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little interludes of this scene are weaved all across the album in later songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ex-factor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives insight into a past relationship gone wrong proving that with growth comes lessons of love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Zion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most intimate track on the album. It\u2019s a song that Hill wrote about her first son, Zion David. Zion\u2019s father is Rohan Marley, who is legendary reggae singer Bob Marley\u2019s son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In it, Lauryn talks about the uncertainty regarding her pregnancy and the joy she found in her child after giving birth. The song also features acclaimed guitarist Carlos Santana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doo Wop (That Thing)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jokingly warns about falling for the wrong one and how deception for sex can be done by both men and women. This track includes a sample of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s Find Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by The 5th Dimension.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Ghetto, Every City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an upbeat homage to her hometown South Orange, New Jersey. Throughout the track Hill recounts good memories from her childhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing Even Matters <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">featuring D\u2019Angelo gives a worry-free feel about love. It was inspired by Hill\u2019s relationship with Rohan Marley and describes how love can make everything else seem irrelevant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell Him <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the final track of the album. In it, Hill uses biblical references to encourage listeners to let God guide them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the success of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her work has inspired a new generation of hip-hop and R&amp;B artists.
