Kevin Boulandier wanted some broadcast news experience when he joined<\/span> MDC InFocus<\/span>,<\/span><\/i> a show created by Miami Dade College to give student journalists an opportunity to polish their on-air talent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The program allowed the 20-year-old, a news writer <\/span>for <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i><\/span> for the past two years<\/span><\/span><\/a>, to sculpt his on-air persona. Boulandier learned to pace himself and lower his voice by a few decibels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing Cuban you speak loud, so I learned that in a voiceover you can\u2019t be yelling at a microphone,\u201d said Boulandier, who has transferred what he learned to his news-focused Instagram page <\/span>NewsAlertKB<\/span><\/span><\/a>. \u201cYou gotta talk normally<\/span>\u2014<\/span>it\u2019s more conversational.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in 2007, MDC InFocus concentrates on reporting news about academic programs, campus events and student profiles at all eight MDC campuses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their <\/span>latest episode<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014published on June 30\u2014highlights initiatives that have taken place at MDC, such as the <\/span>in-person commencement ceremony at loanDepot Park<\/span><\/a><\/span> and how computer hardware giant <\/span>IBM pledged $10 million to train MDC students for in-demand tech jobs<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In May, they published an <\/span>episode<\/span><\/span><\/a> about Aimee Reyes, a cybersecurity student who placed in the top three percent of the National Cyber League competition. The episode\u2019s voice-over was done by Boulandier, who graduated from Kendall Campus in May and is transferring to Boston University this fall to study journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boulandier joins a growing army of successful MDC InFocus alumni.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The list includes<\/span> Alex de Armas<\/b>, a morning news anchor at WSVN 7 News, <\/span>Melissa Adan<\/b>, a reporter\/anchor at NBC 7 San Diego, and <\/span>Valentina Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a roving reporter at <\/span>Am\u00e9rica TeV\u00e9 in Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMDC InFocus helped me get to know the business. Like how to record, how to get used to being in a studio and how to make audios,\u201d said Gonzalez, who was part of the show in 2018. \u201cIf you\u2019re interested in being in TV and radio, it\u2019s important for you [to not only] get experience from the classes but also get experience in the field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The show is spearheaded by twenty-five-year-old Daniel Rodriguez, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in film, television and digital production from MDC in 2019. Before joining MDC InFocus, he worked at MDC-TV<\/span>\u2014<\/span>the College\u2019s broadcast station<\/span>\u2014<\/span>for five years as a camera operator, assistant editor and videographer.\u00a0 Rodriguez was part of teams that won SunCoast Emmy Awards in 2017 for <\/span>Video Game Concert@MDC<\/span><\/i> and in <\/span>2018<\/span><\/span><\/a> for <\/span>Sustainable Fashion<\/span><\/i>, the second installment of the <\/span>Fashion Forward<\/span><\/i> series.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has also worked as a freelancer for CBS Sports and the entertainment news program Access Hollywood, and served as a production assistant on the feature film <\/span>Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At MDC InFocus, Rodriguez chooses the stories for the program, does voice overs, writes scripts and edits all the episodes. He also coaches student journalists on their on-air tone and presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodriguez used his experience to lead MDC InFocus through their coverage during the coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the pandemic, students recorded in-person episodes featuring three segments that lasted a total of more than 25 minutes. However, to ensure safety, the show has been producing two to five-minute segments using voice-overs, pre-recorded B-roll and interviews done via Zoom.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really liked the show [Daniel] put together during the pandemic because it was\u2014and still is\u2014very difficult for producers, directors, and videographers to adapt,\u201d said Rodriguez\u2019s former boss, Ariel Rubalcava, who serves as the executive director and senior producer at MDC-TV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Episodes of MDC In Focus can be found online at the YouTube channels for <\/span>MDC<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span>MDC-TV<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Prospective reporters don\u2019t need to be majoring in media-related studies or have previous reporting experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have a passion and some type of idea of how to report, then we\u2019ll guide you along the way,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/span><\/p>\n
