The Strong Survivors, a <\/span>nonprofit<\/span><\/span><\/a> created by Homestead Campus student Takira Brown, is collecting back-to-school supplies for children in Miami-Dade County through Aug. 17.<\/span><\/p>\n

A variety of donations have already been collected, including pens, pencils, sharpeners and markers. However, they are still accepting folders, composition notebooks, paper, bookbags and monetary gifts at their <\/span>GoFundMe<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

To drop-off school supplies go to Chad Mason MK Law, P.A., 633 S.E. 3rd Ave., Suite 4F in Fort Lauderdale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown, who is studying social work, founded the nonprofit in August of 2020 because she wanted to give back to the community with small acts of kindness like the ones she received when she was part of the foster care system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The school supply giveaway will take place on Aug. 20 at the <\/span>Homestead Police Athletic League<\/span><\/span><\/a> at the <\/span>Chief Curtis K. Ivy PAL gymnasium<\/span> at 600 S.W. 14 Ave.<\/span> at 9 a.m. until supplies run out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event will feature a DJ and an opportunity for six boys and six girls to win a bookbag with a coupon inside for a free haircut or to have their hair braided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnly the strong survive,\u201d said Brown, who is 22 years old. \u201cI want to make kids happy, especially since this year everything is crazy again with COVID-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
