It\u2019s difficult to have open and productive conversations nowadays because we are living in a highly <\/span>polarized<\/span><\/span><\/a> society of groups with contrasting opinions and beliefs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussions are erupting everywhere about controversial topics such as politics, religion, vaccines and protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, when encountering people with different opinions, people refuse to listen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, the proliferation of <\/span>fake news<\/span><\/span><\/a> and misinformation increases the division.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see it on social media, TV or even in person. It\u2019s as if we have become less tolerant when someone confronts us with information that contradicts our perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably heard someone say that you should never discuss religion or <\/span>politics<\/span><\/span><\/a> with others. I disagree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not about the topics themselves, but rather about the attitude we have when we communicate those topics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Have we lost the fine art of thoughtful dialogue? Why do conversations have to end up as frustrating arguments where relationships are broken?<\/span><\/p>\n

Communicating with those that have beliefs that contradict ours will allow us to grow and learn. But to do so, we need to be open-minded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most important skills for engaging in a productive conversation is <\/span>active listening<\/span><\/span><\/a>, instead of having one-way conversations that can lead to misunderstandings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Try to put yourself in the other person\u2019s shoes and ask yourself: what are their reasons for thinking this way? What could I learn from this?<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter if you don\u2019t agree with them, you don\u2019t have to. Simply attempt to understand their point of view.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stop looking at your phone when someone is talking to you. Not only is it rude but it also makes it harder to actively listen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t assume everyone shares your opinions about controversial topics or public figures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember a friend once started a conversation about politics by saying \u201cTrump is a real joke,\u201d without realizing others might like him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, she should\u2019ve started the conversation by asking \u201cwhat do you think about Trump?\u201d or \u201chave you seen his press conference?\u201d That way she would\u2019ve avoided possibly offending someone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Avoid using \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d when asking questions because it can make others feel attacked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Focus and debate on the topic, but don\u2019t attack people. Putting people down doesn\u2019t make you a winner, much less someone that others want to speak with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So remember that productive conversations aren\u2019t to prove you are right.<\/span><\/p>\n
