And I\u2019d tell her that she didn\u2019t love me because she\u2019d never say \u201cI love you,\u201d even though she would show me that she loved me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It never occurred to us that we were feeling unloved because we were expressing our love to each other in the way we know how not how the other person prefers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the well-known <a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/marriage-is-necessary-but-it-cant-fix-relationships\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">marriage<\/span><\/a> counselor and director of marriage seminars, Gary Chapman, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.5lovelanguages.com\/learn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">five love languages<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, words of affirmation and physical touch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people who understand love through acts of service, actions speak louder than words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To others, receiving heartfelt gifts is what makes them feel loved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality time is about giving others your undivided attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Words of affirmation is about using words to affirm other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, physical touch is about being touched appropriately, like through hugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chapman\u2019s book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 5 Love Languages<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he explains that because people have different personalities they give and receive love in different ways. Once we learn to recognize our love language and our loved ones\u2019, we are able to identify the root of our conflicts and grow closer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have a percentage of all five love languages, but there\u2019s always one we prefer more than the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mother\u2019s main preference is acts of service, so unless people do something to show her that they love her, she won\u2019t feel it. Mine is words of affirmation, meaning people have to tell me how they feel about me for me to know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once I learned this, I understood that my mother and I did love each other, but we had been expressing it in a way that we preferred to be loved, not in a way that the other recognized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That taught me to pay attention to how people express their love because that typically shows how they wish to be treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be hard to love someone in a way you don\u2019t prefer, but if you love them, the sacrifice is worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone deserves to feel loved, which is why it\u2019s important for people to know the different ways to show love.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many years my mother and I were constantly arguing about feeling unloved by each other.\u00a0 She would tell me I didn\u2019t love her because I never did anything for her, even though I\u2019d tell her that I loved her every five seconds.
