Have you ever wondered how much safer Krome Avenue would be with street lights?<\/span><\/p>\n

Or how large the decrease in fatal accidents on that road would be yearly with just a little bit of change?<\/span><\/p>\n

Tragic traffic accidents are oftentimes the cause of devastating losses and Krome Avenue takes the money on being one of the most dangerous roads in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n

Krome Avenue, also known as 177th Avenue, stretches from U.S Route 1 to U.S Route 27 and has just two narrow lanes running for 36.71 miles.<\/span><\/p>\n

This undivided two-lane road, in addition to having impatient drivers, makes people feel uncomfortable and unsafe.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the safety of drivers and their passengers, Krome needs to be renovated.<\/span><\/p>\n

This month there was a tragic accident on Krome Avenue and 144th street, that resulted in the death of three people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gabriel Hernandez, 20, a Miami Dade College student died in the fiery wreck.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the honor of him and the many others who have lost their lives on this dangerous road, his friend Malik Micou decided to start a petition to attempt to make a change.<\/span><\/p>\n

The petition is seeking to revamp the road and to add streetlights and add extra lanes to allow drivers sufficient space to pass slow moving vehicles and decrease traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The petition has over five thousand signatures, but in order to get the attention of the state it needs to reach ten thousand.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am hopeful that there will be some sort of change on Krome. As a community we cannot afford more deaths over a road that was constructed for the convenience of low demand traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Krome Avenue was built in the 1950s to provide the people of Homestead a state-road. Krome Avenue is much more densely populated now and deserves expansion as well as greater safety measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the last sixty years, Miami has evolved into a sprawling city; it requires greater info-structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Krome Avenue is a remnant of Miami\u2019s old info-structure and many believe that the State of Florida is responsible for all of the deaths that have occurred, for mismanaging funding and for not allocating sufficient funds in order to improve the State\u2019s rural areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to be aware of the incidents that occur around us. More importantly, though, as leaders and caring individuals, we should always seek to make changes for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n
