The COVID-19 vaccine has allowed things to get back to a somewhat normal state (before the recent spike in COVID cases).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the sports world that has meant fans returning to the stands and things have been no different at Miami Dade College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the lone wolf and sole contributor to the sports section at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the stands is where the fun begins as I get to watch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in-person<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the teams I cover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sports season started with the volleyball team. The Lady Sharks were as talented as ever with freshmen <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/freshmen-defensive-setter-from-puerto-rico-serving-as-lady-sharks-spark-plug\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiaraliz Perez<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/cornelio-is-latest-dominican-athlete-to-lead-lady-sharks-volleyball-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> Romina Cornelio<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerging as stars and sophomore <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/after-opening-season-loss-ceopa-steps-up-to-get-lady-sharks-back-on-track\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janelly Ceopa <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">providing leadership as team captain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They won 18 games, captured a sixth straight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefcsaa.com\/landing\/index\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Florida College System Activities Association<\/span><\/a> State Title and won two games at the National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. That wasn\u2019t enough to win another national championship but the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/lady-sharks-finish-season-ranked-6th-in-the-country-in-volleyball\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Lady Sharks ended the season ranked 6th in the nation<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, I&#8217;ve been busy with men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball. The two squads have painted drastically different pictures. The men\u2019s team is on the rise under<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/he-won-a-high-school-state-title-now-he-aims-for-a-national-championship-at-mdc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> first-year coach Jorge Fernandez<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are 8-6 including a 6-2 mark at home in the Shark Tank. Considering how they got a late start on recruiting after Fernandez joined the team in the summer that is impressive. They have four players averaging double digits in points per game led by guard D&#8217;Monte Brown\u2019s 17.9 average and forward <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/well-traveled-turner-finds-home-with-sharks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khalil Turner\u2019s <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16.5 pace. And they have done all that without star point guard Abdias Carcamo who has only played one game this season due to an achilles injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lady Sharks have not been as successful. They have struggled to find an identity in their first season without longtime head coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/retirement-hasnt-slowed-her-down-after-35-years-at-mdc-summons-still-dedicated-to-creating-champions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Susan Summons who retired in April<\/span> <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after 35 years at MDC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 14 losses in 20 games, the 6-14 Lady Sharks have also suffered through two four game losing streaks. Guard <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/lady-sharks-counting-on-veteran-guards-to-rebound-this-season\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmari Young<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads the team with 13.1 points per game and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/abreu-returns-to-lady-sharks-after-covid-travel-restrictions-kept-her-in-brazil-last-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Brazilian center Larissa Abreu<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is second with 8.4 points per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I look forward to baseball and softball seasons starting later this month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As much as it&#8217;s been a fun journey covering sports at MDC, I would gladly accept some help.
