But Maribel doesn\u2019t have those powers. That difference makes her feel excluded and like she isn\u2019t enough to meet her grandmother\u2019s standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie made me think about the moments where we don&#8217;t see eye to eye with family members, and that it is okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was younger, my favorite person in the whole world was my aunt. Like most children, I\u2019d whine my way into making my parents drive me to her house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30599\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30599\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Toxic-Family-edited.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Toxic-Family-edited.png 800w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Toxic-Family-edited-267x300.png 267w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Toxic-Family-edited-768x864.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SPENCER JOLIBOIS \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She would comfort me and spoil me with clothes, candy, presents, food and trips to the park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But over the years, she started to criticize me for my weight, clothes, classes, grades, extracurricular activities, dreams, college, job, major and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes she\u2019d even compared me to my cousins and brother by using me as an example of what not to become.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was hurtful to deal with such remarks. I stopped visiting her and dreaded family gatherings. I feared making eye contact with her or being stuck in a room that she was in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wanting to avoid her at all costs, I created a list of topics that could steer me away from conversations with her so I could avoid her shaming me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On two occasions, I wanted her to say she was proud of me. When I ran to show her my acceptance letter to a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program and when I was a nominee for the world language Silver Knight award. Even then she found my accomplishments unimpressive and not good enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she is barely present in my life, she still holds a special place in my heart because she impacted my childhood in a positive way.
