{"id":31074,"date":"2022-03-21T16:30:54","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T20:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=31074"},"modified":"2022-03-22T16:26:46","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T20:26:46","slug":"miami-film-festival-shines-spotlight-on-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-film-festival-shines-spotlight-on-cinema\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Film Festival Shines Spotlight On Cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinephiles and movie creators from all around the world celebrated cinematic excellence at the 39th annual Miami Film Festival from March 4-13.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attendees watched films virtually or in-person at Silverspot Cinema, 300 S.E. 3rd St., in downtown Miami and Tower Theater Miami, 1508 S.W. 8th St., in Little Havana during the 10-day festival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 120 narrative films, documentaries and short projects \u202ffrom 35 countries were showcased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis festival gives an opportunity for those who want to share their truth, their creativity, their culture\/background,\u201d said John Paul Amaya, a North Campus student majoring in filmmaking. \u201cThe pandemic didn\u2019t make it any easier for filmmakers and artists who wanted to show their talent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bevy of awards were handed out. Here are a few:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>Rob Requejo Ramos<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 2018 Miami Dade College graduate, won the audience-voted documentary achievement award for his feature film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Beach Shark Club: Legends and Lore of The South Florida Shark Hunters.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The film dives into the history of Miami Beach in the 1970s through the eyes of local shark fishermen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FREDA,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directed by <\/span><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>G\u00e9ssica G\u00e9n\u00e9us<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was awarded the $25,000 Knight MARIMBAS Award. The short film follows protagonist Freda, who lives with her family in Haiti, as she tries to escape the insecurity and violence of her country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You Can Always Come Home <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directed by<\/span><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b> Juan Luis Matos<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, received $30,000 from the Knight Made in MIA Film Award. The short film explores the domestic sphere through the eyes of young children in Miami.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Beauty It Is Unfinished<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directed by <\/span><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>Greko Sklavounos<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, took home the $15,000 second-place prize of the Knight Made in MIA Film Award. It follows a Cuban immigrant in Miami who longs for a lost memory and a voice that produces a dreamy depiction of two tropical landscapes separated by 100 miles of ocean, and two guys dancing at twilight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $10,000 third-place prize of the Knight Made in MIA Film Award was given to School of Entertainment &amp; Design Technology graduate <\/span><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>Mariana Serrano<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s short film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/two-years-ago-she-graduated-from-north-campus-now-her-short-film-is-airing-on-pbs\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Un<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Peque\u00f1o Corte<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film is about a six-year-old girl who cuts one of her pigtails off at school and her overprotective mother rushing her into a beauty salon. In the salon, she becomes the center of attention for all the wrong reasons and is criticized for looking like a boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a full list of the winners,
