{"id":31589,"date":"2022-05-19T12:57:24","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T16:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=31589"},"modified":"2022-05-20T09:07:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T13:07:43","slug":"sedt-alumna-wins-for-silver-waters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/sedt-alumna-wins-for-silver-waters\/","title":{"rendered":"SEDT Alumna Wins Five National Academy Of Television Arts &#038; Sciences Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Domenicca Botero\u2019s 88-year-old grandfather\u2014Medardo Alberto Cevallas Balda\u2014passed away in March of 2020, she struggled to accept his loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the time that he passed away up until the funeral, I was convinced that it was a mistake,\u201d Botero said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fueled by those raw emotions, Botero\u2014who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in film production from the School of Entertainment &amp; Design Technology in 2021\u2014wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Waters, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 13-minute film about an elderly woman named Marisol who is in denial about her husband\u2019s death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film resonated with audiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 6, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Waters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won a $2,000 prize for capturing first place at <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbfilm.com\/winners-of-the-27th-annual-student-showcase-of-films-announced\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Palm Beaches Student Showcase of Films<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the College Feature\/Short Awards category, the largest student film competition in Florida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following day, the film won five production awards\u2014Best Long Form Fiction, Best Photography, Best Editing, Best Audio and Best Writing\u2014at the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/suncoastchapter.org\/students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suncoast Student Production Awards <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sponsored by the National Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences, the same organization that hands out Emmys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s emotional, it\u2019s a good story and she did it in a very interesting way,\u201d said Barry Gordon, the SEDT chairperson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botero wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Waters <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the summer of 2020 with her friend, Daniel Bellot, for their film workshop course at North Campus. In the spring of 2021, she assembled a crew of film students, alumni and industry professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She served as the film\u2019s director and producer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNobody knows the story better than her and nobody knows the footage better than I do,\u201d said Samuel Romero, who served as the film\u2019s cinematographer and was the co-winner of the Best Editing and Best Photography awards for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Waters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/north-campus-sedt-students-win-suncoast-award-for-short-film\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Suncoast Awards<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short film was shot in three locations\u2014Botero\u2019s home in Miami Shores, Coral Gables Congregational Church and Virginia Key Beach. It was finalized in November of 2021. The beach was a key element of the film, serving as an homage to Botero\u2019s grandparents who honeymooned at a beach in Veracruz, Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing a name for the film, she merged the idea of seawater and the silver color of an elderly person\u2019s hair. That led her to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver Waters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now she is on to her next project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botero, who is currently working in the art department for an Apple TV show based on the book <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/tv-pr\/news\/2021\/08\/apple-orders-new-drama-series-bad-monkey-starring-vince-vaughn-and-written-by-bill-lawrence\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bad Monkey<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, plans to use the Palm Beach award money for her next film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing Pretend. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follows a little boy trying to understand death.
