They also needed a GPA of at least 3.5, demonstrate unmet financial needs and plan to enroll full-time in a baccalaureate program during the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a pool of more than 1,200 applicants, including 332 community colleges, one hundred winners were selected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Ana Cristina Camba<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31587\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31587\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ana_christina_c_hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CAMBA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After witnessing deaf customers struggle to order food at the Domino\u2019s Pizza restaurant she works at, Ana Cristina Camba was encouraged to try to develop assistive technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s not a direct bridge for people with hearing impairments in our world,\u201d the 19-year-old said. \u201cI want to establish a software that can bridge that disability with a hearing world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camba, who wants to become a computer engineer, also performed mathematics and programming research as an intern at the School of Science at MDC. In 2021, she co-founded the Interactive Bilingual Reading Program in Nicaragua in partnership with <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fneinternational.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FNE International<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help children learn English.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She graduated in May with a 4.0 GPA and an associate&#8217;s degree in computer engineering from Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus. She served as the vice president of Sigma Zeta Honors Society, layout editor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/search\/?q=urbana\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Urbana<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the campus&#8217; literary arts magazine) and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camba hopes to attend the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Stanford in the fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Stefani Davila<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31585\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/stefani_d_hs.jpg\" alt=\"Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DAVILA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During 4th and 5th grade, Stefani Davila sold candy with her friends to raise funds for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jovenescontraelcancer.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Jovenes Contra el C\u00e1ncer<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (youth against cancer) foundation in Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe foundation is my second home,\u201d Davila said. \u201cI have constantly learned new ways to feel, experience, value and live my life through the stories of patients and service to those who need it most.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00f3venes Contra el C\u00e1ncer, established by her brother, Alex Davila, before he passed away in 2006 from Osteosarcoma, focuses on raising cancer awareness and helping patients cope with their diagnosis and recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Davila founded the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_merakiyouth_\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Meraki Youth Organization<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to promote community service, education and climate change awareness. She also volunteered as a photographer for immigrant advocacy organizations such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unitedwedream.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">United We Dream<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaimmigrant.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Florida Immigrant Coalition<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davila graduated with a 3.85 GPA and an associate&#8217;s degree in business administration from the Padr\u00f3n Campus. She served as the co-editor-in-chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urbana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the president of Hermione\u2019s Army.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 18-year-old is considering attending Emerson College and UNC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Paola Troconis Infante<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31596\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31596\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31596 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/paola_t-i_hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TROCONIS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following her father\u2019s election as a magistrate in 2017, Paola Troconis Infante fled political persecution in Venezuela and came to the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired by her uncle\u2019s career as a surgeon, Troconis hopes to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a prosthetic surgeon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWinning the scholarship has been a unique experience,\u201d Troconis said. \u201cIt was not only a surprise for me but a motivation that everything I propose with effort I will be able to achieve it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Troconis and her mother, Isabel Infante, co-founded the Casa Hogar Project\u2014a nonprofit dedicated to providing low-income children with food, clothing and other necessities\u2014in Venezuela. She wants to implement the same efforts in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Troconis, 20, graduated with a 3.94 GPA and an associate\u2019s degree in biomedical engineering from Kendall Campus in May. She served as the secretary of She The People, a club geared toward women empowerment, the treasurer of the Nurse Club and a Student Government Association senator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said she will likely enroll at the Georgia Institute of Technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Daphnie Velasquez Garcia<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31586\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31586\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31586 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/daphne_v_hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VELASQUEZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daphnie Velasquez Garcia has dreamt about becoming a physician since she was four when her grandmother, Maybell Curt\u00eds, passed away from Leukemia. Her commitment to medicine grew last year when her mother was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want to definitely go into oncology research, but at the same time treat the patients because I know that that relationship between the physician and the patient helps a lot,\u201d Velazquez said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Velazquez, 20, interned at the University of Florida last summer to complete research on how pesticide was affecting avocado plants. She won the Microbiology and Cell Sciences Research Poster Award at the Cell Science Summer Research Experience Symposium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Velasquez graduated from the Padr\u00f3n Campus with a 3.84 GPA and an associate\u2019s degree in biology following the pre-med track. She was the Beta Beta Beta Honors society president, SGA senator, PTK member and a webmaster for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urbana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She will enroll at UNC this fall with a full-ride scholarship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Alexa Bencomo<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31588\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31588 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/alexa_b_hs.jpg\" alt=\"Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BENCOMO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her trips to Cuba, Alexa Bencomo became aware of the health crisis taking place in her parent\u2019s homeland. Since then, she has focused her career on global health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to alleviate the health crisis that I saw in Cuba and many developing countries,\u201d Bencomo said. \u201cI would like to work with the Red Cross and visit countries where aid is needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At North Campus, Bencomo served as secretary for SGA and PTK, vice president of the campus\u2019 Global Medical Brigades chapter and founded the Aquaponics Club to promote environmental sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last summer, the 20-year-old interned at St. Thomas University to research the effects of medicinal plants on the migration of breast cancer cells.
