{"id":31717,"date":"2022-05-31T14:00:17","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T18:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=31717"},"modified":"2022-06-17T10:42:05","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T14:42:05","slug":"miami-dade-college-receives-500000-grant-to-expand-nursing-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-dade-college-receives-500000-grant-to-expand-nursing-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Dade College Receives $500,000 Grant To Expand Nursing Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Health Foundation of South Florida to help address a national nursing shortage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/registered-nurses.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, approximately 194,500 openings for registered nurses are expected every year during the next decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grant will be used for scholarships, books, exam reviews and to pay for students to attain certifications in areas like electrocardiography. It will also cover a three-day nursing boot camp for this fall\u2019s incoming class and to perform a review for students in the cohort before they graduate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor our nursing students, it\u2019s an opportunity to make sure that they receive the resources they need for success,\u201d said Tommie Norris, the dean of the School of Nursing at Medical Campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College, which hopes to grow its nursing program by 40 percent in the next three years, must use the funding in the next 18 months. Nearly 350 nursing students participated in the school\u2019s Pinning Ceremony held at Kendall Campus in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Benjam\u00edn Le\u00f3n School of Nursing, which offers associate and baccalaureate degree programs, has locations at Medical and Homestead campuses. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Campus held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for new certified nursing assistant laboratories on March 14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To keep up with the program\u2019s growth, Medical Campus plans to hire five to seven additional faculty members this fall, according to the Campus&#8217; president Bryan Stewart. Another portion of the grant funding will be used for guest lecturers and to help students with financial hardships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Students] have so much potential and possibility but that extra push\u2014those resources, [like] tutoring, having grants for textbooks and NCLEX review\u2014will take it to a whole new level,\u201d said Anna Johnson, a nursing student at Homestead Campus who was crowned <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/anna-johnson-crowned-first-ever-miss-mdc-homestead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss MDC Homestead<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSo my heart is overfilled with joy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions to award MDC the $500,000 grant began last December.
