{"id":32000,"date":"2022-06-30T14:21:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T18:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=32000"},"modified":"2022-07-21T13:48:26","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T17:48:26","slug":"miami-dade-colleges-journalism-pioneer-raleigh-mann-passes-away-at-87","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-dade-colleges-journalism-pioneer-raleigh-mann-passes-away-at-87\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pioneer Of Journalism At Miami Dade College Passes Away At 87"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When faculty adviser Barbara Garfunkel recruited Raleigh Mann to serve as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Falcon Times&#8217; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/former-mdc-student-newspaper-alumni\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founding editor-in-chief<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1961, Dade County Junior College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014known today as Miami Dade College\u2014served less than 1,500 students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe paper was kind of an affirmation that we were legitimate,\u201d Mann would <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/journalism-expands-at-the-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tell<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Reporter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an interview <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 50 years later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the paper\u2019s inaugural year, Mann guided a staff of less than 10 writers. They produced 14 issues and fed their curiosity in cramped quarters; the paper\u2019s first office was in a 10 x 10 white-wooden structure with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limited resources\u2014three manual typewriters and a darkroom that was originally a restroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the meager resources, the feisty publication laid the groundwork for a fertile journalism program that has produced 22 National Pacemakers since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experience also shaped Mann. It served as the genesis of a four-decade-long journalism career that made pit stops at the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Herald<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fort Lauderdale News <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a professorship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s Hussman School of Journalism and Media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe pretty much set the course of my life,\u201d said Diana D&#8217;Abruzzo, one of Mann\u2019s students at UNC who would later work at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginian-Pilo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a publication of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann\u2019s passion for the craft remained vibrant right up until his final days. On May 19, he died in his sleep from atrial fibrillation in Pittsboro, N.C., leaving a legacy that those who love him say will outlive his time on earth.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve never seen him give just a little scrap of himself,\u201d said Barbara Beth Woodard, one of Mann\u2019s daughters. \u201cThere&#8217;s nothing halfway or half-hearted. He&#8217;s all the way there.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>Journalism Legacy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann was born in Baltimore on August 21, 1934. He remained there until the spring of 1957 when he was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and his doctor recommended he relocate to a warmer climate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he arrived in Miami, Mann enrolled at what is known today as the North Campus. PHOTO COURTESY OF LINDA SUE LOPIANO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While serving as the editor-in-chief, Mann befriended Betsy Ann Little, an administrative assistant in the President\u2019s Office at North Campus. Their bond developed into a romantic relationship and led to marriage after eight months of dating. The couple tied the knot on August 21, 1962<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann\u2019s 28th birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1963, Mann started taking classes at the University of South Florida. He served as editor-in-chief of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Times, University of South Florida Campus Edition, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before graduating with a bachelor\u2019s degree in political science in 1965.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann would spend the next two years as a government reporter in the West Hollywood and Broward County bureaus of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fort Lauderdale News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By 1967, Mann had started a decade-long tenure at the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Miami Herald<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covering religion, business, real estate, government and the police beat. He wrapped up his last two years at the publication as the Flair section editor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the features section of the paper\u2019s Broward edition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covering dance, music and theater, according to Woodard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 1960s, Mann also became a dad. His oldest daughter Katie was born in 1965, followed by Barbara Beth in 1967 and Evelyn in 1969.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps it was his jaunt into fatherhood that made teaching young people a natural fit.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1978, Mann left Florida and became a journalism lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his tenure, Mann served as faculty adviser to the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the American Copy Editors Society and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann&#8217;s warm charisma made his students feel at home. Legions of youngsters used his office, which sat across from his classroom until he retired in 2000 as a tenured professor, as a safe haven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was a happy person,\u201d said April Jones Prince, one of the students who sought refuge in his office after she moved from Minnesota to study at UNC and earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in journalism and mass communications in 1997. \u201cThe kind of person that just made you feel like home away from home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><b>Happy Retirement<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During retirement, Mann dedicated his time to his lifelong love for music, theater and writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann\u2019s interest in music flourished during his teenage years in Baltimore. He was part of the youth choir at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Govans-Boundary United Methodist Church<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and played the trombone for the marching band at\u00a0 Baltimore City College. Mann also formed his own group, Raleigh Mann and his Orchestra; they performed at proms and dances throughout the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North Carolina, he became a member of the Choral Society of Durham, Voices: the Chapel Hill Chorus and the United Voices of Praise gospel choir.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis religion came very deeply out of his heart,\u201d Woodard said, referencing how choral music allowed her father to connect with his religion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1995 to 2007, Mann was part of the United Voices of Praise, a biracial gospel choir that conducted several international tours in faraway places like Germany, Scotland and Hawaii. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Mann never stopped writing. In 2013, he published a 150-page memoir, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jumping-Mixed-Feelings-Family-Memoir-ebook\/dp\/B00IIS99RG\/ref=nav_ya_signin?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=&amp;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Jumping With Mixed Feelings: A Family Memoir<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Three years later, he started a blog, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/raleighmann.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Raleigh\u2019s Musings<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dispensing stories about his life experiences, chatting about current events and sharing anecdotes about loved ones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, Mann was hard at work on a novel based on his upbringing in Baltimore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;He said that you never know what will be your last moment, so just keep pouring out love to those you love.
