A lot has changed since Joey Bada$$\u2019s critically acclaimed mixtape <\/span>1999 <\/span><\/i>was released in 2012.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project, loaded with <\/span>double entendres and flow switches out the wazoo, <\/span>propelled the young artist into hip-hop stardom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, after a five-year hiatus, <\/span>Joey Bada$$<\/span><\/span><\/a> is back with his latest album: <\/span>2000<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It features the production muscle of established veterans such as Statik Selektah and Mike WiLL Made-It and guest appearances from industry titans such as P. Diddy and Nas. The collaboration with hip-hop\u2019s royalty<\/span><\/a> adds to the album\u2019s elegant beats and relaxed tone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The album is an easy-on-the-ears listen. It\u2019s marketed as the spiritual successor to <\/span>1999<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>

On <\/span>Brand New 911<\/span><\/i>\u2014one of <\/span>2000\u2019s<\/span><\/i> 14 tracks\u2014Joey recalls the struggles he overcame to achieve his goals, reflecting on how some people continue to pray for his downfall.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of Us <\/span><\/i>features California native Larry June and contains a \u201cknock it out the park like Albert Pujols\u201d reference to <\/span>Where It\u2019$ At? <\/span><\/i>from <\/span>1999<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Songs like these are strong highlights. They seamlessly blend Joey\u2019s signature swagger with his lyrics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, you can have too much of a good thing, which Joey fails to realize on tracks like <\/span>Cruise Control <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Welcome Back<\/span><\/i>. On these cuts, he raps sweet nothings into the listener\u2019s ear with the emphasis being on \u201cnothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The substance and clever wordplay we\u2019re used to getting from Joey is replaced with general statements and empty glamor. It\u2019s the equivalent of purchasing a fake diamond ring and flaunting it<\/span>\u2014eventually<\/span> the cracks are exposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of the issues that pollute the record, the impressive list of collaborators who appear on the album help the project outshine its flaws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make Me Feel <\/span><\/i>exhibits the best flows on the album and presents Joey at his most aggressive. The \u201calligator jaws sayin\u2019 ain\u2019t nobody greater\u201d and \u201ckeep the game at bay like the 49ers\u201d bars are why hip-hop heads fell in love with him as a lyricist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joey\u2019s storytelling on <\/span>Survivors Guilt<\/span><\/i> tugs at your heartstrings. In it, he honors his friends Capital Steez and Junior B while examining what he could have done to protect them from their untimely passing. <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

He compares their death to the \u201cdarkest cloud\u201d in the sky and exposes his vulnerability, explaining how he lost his voice when he lost them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song is the perfect transition to <\/span>Written in the Stars<\/span><\/i>, the album\u2019s closing track. Its jazzy instrumental is more emotionally compelling than flashy and emphasizes his happiness with where his life is and what the future holds.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can\u2019t help but smile when Joey Bada$$ speaks about how successful he has become, even if the once prominent fire in his belly doesn\u2019t emit the same flame.<\/span><\/p>\n
