This communication perpetuates two false narratives that I\u2019ve seen shared on social media by uninformed people.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32445\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32445\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monkeypox_web-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monkeypox_web-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monkeypox_web-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monkeypox_web-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monkeypox_web.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JESSICA SOTO \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, the warning to the homosexual community leads to the insinuation that the disease is limited to this specific community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While higher rates of monkeypox have been reported among same-sex couples, they are not the only ones affected. It wasn\u2019t until recent backlash that the WHO decided to clarify that everyone is prone to infection regardless of background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, the statements from the WHO also implied that monkeypox is exclusively transmitted through sexual contact. That is incorrect. The disease can be transmitted through physical contact that doesn\u2019t have to be sexual.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These unclear communications, even if unintentional, cause harm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LGBTQ community knows the dangers of <a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/outdated-blood-donation-restrictions-placed-on-gay-men-need-to-end\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">pigeonholing a disease to a specific community<\/span><\/a>. In the 1980s, HIV was labeled as a gay disease and as a result it was underestimated as a danger by the rest of society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That led to deadly consequences not only for the queer community but for the nation as a whole. Since its outbreak in 1981, HIV has killed more than 40 million people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must be careful in the way we speak about monkeypox. Misinformation can cause a false sense of security for some at the cost of stigmatizing others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By not stereotyping diseases, we can work together toward the common goal of protecting public health.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pandemic taught us that public perception about a disease is just as impactful as the disease itself.
