2012 had no shortage of fresh meat to chew on in this regard. Artists like <\/span>Big K.R.I.T.<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Joey Bada$$<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Logic<\/span><\/span><\/a> provided necessary alternatives to mainstream hip-hop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In retrospect, one collaboration between a charismatic gourmet chef turned rapper and an established juggernaut producer continues to be overlooked. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Rare Chandeliers<\/span><\/i> by Action Bronson and The Alchemist laid down thirteen tracks that feel like a trip through the mind of a mafioso that loves to run his mouth in poetic detail. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Symbol<\/span><\/i>, the mixtape\u2019s second track, featured a gargantuan guitar groove accompanied by Bronson\u2019s wild tales of organized crime and driving expensive cars like Mad Max behind the wheel. I can\u2019t fail to mention his bar about providing \u201chealth benefits and dental\u201d to his crew as it is downright hilarious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Randy The Musical <\/span><\/i>sports three different types of East Coast style beats through lines like \u201cnever sing the blues, man my team mo\u2019 better\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m in the street like a hooker\u2019s feet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outlandish moments like this capture your attention like watching a gangster flick or walking into a grindhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

All it takes is a look at the project\u2019s cover art to see that the musical approach was intentional. The mixtape\u2019s sound is what you\u2019d see heading inside the helicopter of a mob boss who\u2019s holding a machine gun and mowing down rivals on a rooftop.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

That very persona is what helped Bronson come into his own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the release of <\/span>Rare Chandeliers<\/span><\/i>, his technical skill and personality were constantly compared to legends such as Ghostface Killah and Kool G Rap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Action welcomed these parallels. However, he would go on to silence them by \u00a0amplifying his charm and sense of humor in his mixtapes.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The frequent mentions of sumptuous cuisine, esoteric-like allusions to athletes and pop culture reference how he\u2019s best known for what came to fruition on this record. <\/span>Rare Chandeliers <\/span><\/i>is where he embraced the \u201cgood fella turned rock star turned sports fanatic\u201d cycle of identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And like any good fella, they always need a weapon. For Action Bronson, that weapon is The Alchemist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The instrumentals are outstanding.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Alchemist has a gift for finding the perfect loop\u2014whether it be a soul chop or brassy trumpet notes\u2014and fusing it with vocal samples that keep the crowd hype. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Aside from the songs I\u2019ve already mentioned, there are even more grimy bangers like <\/span>Sylvester Lundgren <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Demolition Man<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>When you\u2019re such a student of the game as he is, having The Alchemist produce an entire project for you is comparable to using <\/span>Bo Jackson<\/span> in<\/span> <\/span>Tecmo Bowl<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a>: It\u2019s a cheat code.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the ten-year anniversary of <\/span>Rare Chandeliers<\/span><\/i> creeping up, the question of why it isn\u2019t talked about enough grows stronger.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s entirely possible that it was hidden in a sea of other tapes released the same year. Still, it likely boiled down to it never being put on a streaming platform that adapted to the new age of music consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite this, being able to listen to it on the far corners of the internet is what adds to its mystique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In essence, <\/span>Rare Chandeliers <\/span><\/i>is the NC-17 B movie your uncle keeps tucked away in his basement. Once you turn it on, you can\u2019t help but watch.<\/span><\/p>\n
