Anllelivis Fernandez knows a thing or two about high expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her mother<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Ana Ibis Fernandez Valle<\/span>\u2014<\/span>is the most decorated female volleyball player in Olympic history, capturing three golds and one bronze from 1992 to 2004.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Anllelivis, who has hopscotched the globe with her mother from Russia, Spain and Italy, is poised to blaze her own volleyball path at Miami Dade College.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 6-foot-7 inch opposite hitter is a sophomore on the Lady Sharks, the preseason No. 6 ranked junior college volleyball program in the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are attempting to win a national title,\u201d Anllelivis said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 20-year-old started her athletic career in the United States last year as a member of the <\/span>State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota<\/span> volleyball team. She excelled, scoring 187 points and adding 153 kills.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the Manatees struggled, finishing with a 2-16 record.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the season, Anllelivis asked for her release from the team. Shortly after, she reached out to MDC head volleyball coach Kiko \u201cOrigenes\u201d Benoit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe is very coachable,\u201d Benoit said. \u201cShe trains really hard because she has her own goals.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anllelivis was born in Mariano, a borough in Havana, Cuba in 2002. Four years later, she moved to Spain with her mother <\/span>to play for a professional team in Murcia. In 2004, <\/span>Ana Ibis won her last Olympic medal for Cuba<\/span>\u2014a bronze\u2014at the Games in Athens, Greece.<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2016, the talented teenager <\/span>began crafting her volleyball skills. In 2019, she started a one-year stint with the Fundaci\u00f3n Centro Alto Entrenamiento y Promoci\u00f3n Deportiva in Soria, Spain. The following season she played at Club Volleyball Sayre Centro Comercial La Ballena which is part of the Murcia Volleyball Federation in Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have always told her that volleyball is a beautiful sport,\u201d Ana Ibis said. \u201cShe has to take advantage of the size she has, study and more importantly, she has to enjoy the experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This season, the Lady Sharks hope to utilize Anllelivis length to fortify its frontline. She joins an impressive core that includes outside hitter <\/span>Romina Cornelio<\/span><\/a><\/span>, defensive specialist Kiaraliz Perez, setter Luisa Melloni and new players Beatrice Carulli, Alexandra Koleva and Yanelis Cabada-Mendoza.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the Lady Sharks\u2019 first four matches, Anllelivis had 28 kills, 64 total attacks and scored 32 points. The team, which has eight new players this season, is 2-2. They are working on their chemistry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being a first-year player at MDC, Anllelivis, who is majoring in business, is doing her best to build camaraderie.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone needs help she is always there,\u201d said Anllelivis’ roommate, Ana Tevdoradze, a six-foot-three outside hitter from the country of Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lady Sharks’ next game is on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. versus Iowa Western Community College in Fort Myers at the Battle of the Beach Tournament.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
