{"id":32806,"date":"2022-09-15T11:19:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T15:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=32806"},"modified":"2022-09-22T10:42:08","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T14:42:08","slug":"harry-potter-and-artificial-intelligence-meet-in-this-literature-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/harry-potter-and-artificial-intelligence-meet-in-this-literature-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Harry Potter And Artificial Intelligence Meet In This Literature Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A North Campus course is merging the worlds of Artificial Intelligence and literature to create a unique learning experience for students at Miami Dade College.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exploratory initiative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter and the Secret Power of AI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses AI to analyze the fantasy novel series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cohort featuring 22 Honors College students, in majors such as computer science and communications, is conducting the study for their Issues in Literature &amp; Culture<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIT 2480<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014class this fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s an experiment,\u201d said Carmen Bucher, one of the associate professors teaching the course. \u201cThere hasn\u2019t been, that we know, anyone who has fed an entire series, implementing AI to read it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea is one of 10 projects supported by the President\u2019s Innovation Fund. It\u2019s being supported by a two-year $10,000 grant, the majority of which will be used to pay for an intern who will assist students with the AI portion of the class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studying the Harry Potter series is not a new concept at MDC. It was first offered as a normal literature class in 2018 and has been taught at North, West, Wolfson and Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n campuses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this fall\u2019s course is the first to incorporate AI. Students in the class are aiming to apply technology to learn about literary techniques\u2014such as alliteration, metaphors and similes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to AI, the class implements literary elements from the book into class activities. For example, students are sorted into four different Harry Potter houses\u2014Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor\u2014where they compete for points by conducting activities such as Kahoot games\u2014a competition-style quiz used in schools to study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe class feels like you are in a classroom at Hogwarts trying to compete with your classmates for points,\u201d said Angelica Pita, a second-year criminal justice student taking the 16-week course. \u201cIt gets very competitive but we are all having fun.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea for the hybrid course was born last year after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-future-is-now-north-campus-unveils-new-artificial-intelligence-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">North Campus announced it was opening an AI Center<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After the announcement of the new facility, Bucher reached out to George Gabb, a computer science associate professor, to carry out her vision. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo be able to see the general population of students engaging in having these discussions about this technology that\u2019s going to be shaping the future of the workforce and the work that we do is very rewarding,\u201d Gabb said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the course, Gabb and Bucher partnered with Stephanie Garcia\u2014the associate director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/learning-resources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Learning Resources<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at North Campus\u2014to create a LibGuide. The open-source website directs users to resources such as visuals, materials and information that can be used as a course guide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Harry Potter AI LibGuide is expected to be active within the next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the course is already inspiring new ideas.
