{"id":32994,"date":"2022-10-04T11:45:37","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T15:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=32994"},"modified":"2022-10-14T16:04:01","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T20:04:01","slug":"professional-wrestlings-blurred-lines-what-is-too-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/professional-wrestlings-blurred-lines-what-is-too-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Professional Wrestling\u2019s Blurred Lines: What Is Too Far?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dramatic world of professional wrestling is synonymous with irony.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A combat sport with predetermined results and episodic storylines produces the most backstage beef between talent\u2014the universe\u2019s way of reminding us that life imitates art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, instead of handling their real-life issues diplomatically, wrestlers allow them to seep into on-screen rivalries to create the most volatile work environment on the face of the Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should be asking ourselves whether this is morally right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when it comes to mankind and its need to be entertained, there is no regard for human resources\u2019 approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/i-love-watching-wrestling-you-should-too\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">We love drama<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrestling companies provide a toxic combination of reality and fiction, with varying degrees of impact on the company itself. Because ultimately, that is where the pondering begins: Is this hands-off approach best for business?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is more complicated than you might think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Wrestling Entertainment\u2019s Survivor Series pay-per-view in 1997 is exhibit A. <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3BcET1Hge84\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The genuine hatred between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart in the main event was palpable<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hart was not willing to lose the championship to Michaels that night, especially not in his home country of Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With WWE facing pressure from the rival organization, World Championship Wrestling, and no guarantee from Bret that he would surrender the title, owner and chief executive officer Vince McMahon made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jk_hexJvIJU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">the controversial decision of breaking \u201ckayfabe\u201d (the staged performance) and forcefully giving Michaels the belt through executive order<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That created what is known as the infamous \u201cMontreal Screwjob.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But instead of allowing the situation to derail the company\u2019s viewership, McMahon utilized the setback as part of the WWE mythos, simultaneously creating his own persona as the Kafkaesque ruler of the wrestling business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.2xzone.com\/ratings\/rawhistory.shtml#.YyIXwKTMK3B\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What transpired next was the biggest boom in the business\u2019s lifespan since the sports\u2019 80s golden age<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the \u201cAttitude Era\u201d was in full effect. In an illogical turn of events, the wrestling juggernaut was rewarded for playing stupid games and was rewarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast-forward to the current day, and to no one\u2019s surprise, history has repeated itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Elite Wrestling, the fledgling organization hoping to establish itself as the industry\u2019s new top dog, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tjrwrestling.net\/news\/suspended-aew-stars-full-gear\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">has recently been engulfed in a flaming ball of controversy and a real-life spectacle<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to the suspension of many of its top stars and casting a dark cloud on the company\u2019s locker room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, this hasn\u2019t deterred fans from tuning in to the Wednesday program<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrestlingnews.co\/aew-news\/aew-dynamite-9-7-22-draws-1-035-million-viewers-for-post-all-out-show\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> and raising ratings<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional wrestling is a paradox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When wrestlers decide to air their qualms on live television, fans become more invested, but the company hurts on the inside<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unless it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both can be right, and that\u2019s what makes it such an anomaly. The beauty of the performance is how little sense it makes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many of life\u2019s intricacies, sometimes the best thing we can do is sit
