Four Miami Dade College student publications\u2014<\/span>AXIS, Urbana, Miambiance <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>\u2014have been selected as finalists for the prestigious Pacemaker award. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The prize, awarded by the Associated Collegiate Press, is the highest distinction given to collegiate publications. Finalists were selected based on work published during the 2021-22 academic year. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Winners will be announced at the Fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. on Oct 28. <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Reporter<\/span><\/i>, the student media outlet at Miami Dade College, is <\/span>one of six finalists<\/span> <\/span><\/a>nationwide in the two-year student newspaper category. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Among the top stories tackled by the publication last year: A feature on an 11-year-old\u2014<\/span>Noah Thomas<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014taking classes at Kendall Campus, coverage of the College\u2019s <\/span>return to in-person classes<\/span><\/a><\/span> and a profile on <\/span>a baseball player<\/span><\/a><\/span> who competed at MDC last year after defecting from the Cuban National Team.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The paper has won three Pacemakers since its founding in 2010 and was awarded the prize last year. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>In addition, Ammy Sanchez, who served as the publication\u2019s editor-in-chief, is a finalist for various individual ACP awards including Reporter of the Year and Sports Feature Story. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cThis means the absolute world to me,\u201d said Sanchez, who is now a junior studying organizational communications at Florida International University. \u201cI\u2019m blessed to have been part of such a high-caliber newspaper.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the two-year literary magazine category, MDC placed <\/span>three of the six finalists<\/span><\/a>\u2014<\/span>AXIS<\/span><\/i> at North Campus, <\/span>Urbana <\/span><\/i>at Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus and <\/span>Miambiance <\/span><\/i>at Kendall Campus. <\/span><\/p>\n

AXIS, the literary arts magazine at North Campus, has been a Pacemaker finalist the past five years. They won the prize in 2018, 2020 and 2021.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s publication took an existentialist approach to the deconstruction and reconstruction of the self through pieces that showcased secret confessions, dream aspirations and coming-of-age stories. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cWe really wanted our readers to witness a journey of self-discovery that they could relate to within the magazine,\u201d said Anthony Barrios, who served as the editor-in-chief for AXIS last year.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Miambiance, the literary arts magazine at Kendall Campus, has won Pacemakers in 2009 and 2018. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Their volume concentrated on student self-expression through horror pieces that showcased body parts such as lungs, breasts and female genitalia. They represented topics like eating disorders and sexual abuse. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cI feel really proud to see it being nominated [and] getting recognition,\u201d said Megan Carrion, the editor-in-chief of <\/span>Miambiance <\/span><\/i>last year. \u201cIt was a huge labor of love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbana, the literary arts magazine at the Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus, won an Innovation Pacemaker last year. This year\u2019s issue focused on a coming-of-age theme, featuring pieces reflecting on first experiences and overcoming trauma.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Additionally, several Urbanites were selected as finalists for individual ACP awards including Social Media Campaign, Podcast, Blog and Social Media Promotion. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cWe put heart and passion into it,\u201d said Stefani Davila, who served as the magazine\u2019s co-editor-in-chief. \u201cSeeing we were nominated made us feel accomplished.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
