When a trailblazing band of students at Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus contemplated starting a literary arts magazine in 2007, they asked professor Emily Sendin to be their advisor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fifteen years later, Urbana<\/em>, which originally spawned as an online product with only six members, has morphed into a literary heavyweight that features about 20 members and has won more than 100 national and state awards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazine has a weekly podcast\u2014<\/span>Urbanites<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, a robust social media presence, a <\/span>YouTube<\/span><\/a><\/span> channel and a yearly print edition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, the publication won its first magazine <\/span>Pacemaker<\/span><\/a><\/span> at the Fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. on Oct 28.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sendin, who was inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association <\/span>Hall of Fame<\/span><\/a><\/span> last year, has been the publication’s driving force.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this school year, the 48-year-old, who has taught English, literature and creative writing at Miami Dade College for the past 23 years, was forced to relinquish the reins of the magazine she birthed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Aug. 22, Sendin was replaced by composition and literature professors Alicia Garcia and Omar Figueras.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The action is a result of a stipulation enacted at Padr\u00f3n Campus in 2018 that doesn\u2019t allow a professor to oversee the publication for more than three years\u2014unless no one new applies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Garcia and Figueras were selected by a faculty member from the Communication, Arts & Philosophy Department who was asked to oversee the process by the department chair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbana<\/span><\/i> is the only Miami Dade College magazine to use this policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn’t a decision of my own making,\u201d Sendin said. \u201cI\u2019m not stepping down. I wanted to leave on my own terms<\/span>, <\/span>but I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

New Leadership <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Garcia, who has been an English professor at Padr\u00f3n Campus since 2018, said her decision to advise the magazine stems from a desire to connect with students.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve been on campus a while,\u201d said Garcia, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in English and Spanish from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and a master\u2019s degree in linguistics from Florida International University. \u201cIt’s time for me to start carving out relationships with students outside the classroom.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, the 41-year-old taught English to elementary school students in South Korea before becoming an English, literature and journalism teacher at LaSalle High School from 2006 to 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of the classroom, Garcia\u2019s passion for theater led her to co-found the <\/span>Society Circus Players<\/span><\/a><\/span> improv troupe in 2014. For the past six years, she has also taught improv at local after-school programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sept 21, Garcia used her acting experience to lead an improv workshop that helped Padr\u00f3n Campus students sharpen their improvisation and storytelling skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m super happy that this is something I get to do,” Garc\u00eda said. \u201cMy priority is that the students feel supported in what they want to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Figueras, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in humanities from FIU and a master\u2019s degree in creative writing from Spalding University in Kentucky, has taught English at Padr\u00f3n Campus for the past <\/span>eight years. Previously, he served as an adjunct English professor at Broward College from 2013 to 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a 2016 YouTube <\/span>interview<\/span><\/a><\/span>, he said his love for English stems from his childhood when his father bought him composition notebooks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He has served as an advisory board member for Reading Queer\u2014a writing academy\u2014and as fiction co-editor for the online literary magazine <\/span>Blood Lotus.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

His work has been featured in the <\/span>Composite Arts Magazine<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Penumbra Literary Magazine<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Louisville Review.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Figueras previously co-advised <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> with Sendin from 2016 to 2019. He did not respond to three email requests for an interview for this story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Humble Beginnings\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007, as Sendin prepared to start <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>, she reached out to Marta Magellan, who at the time was advisor to <\/span>Miambiance<\/span><\/i>, Kendall Campus\u2019 literary magazine.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

With Magellan\u2019s help, Sendin learned layout design, the importance of photos and graphics and how to mentor students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe was an amazing resource,\u201d Sendin said. \u201cShe sat with me and taught me the ropes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first few years, Sendin scrambled to find space to host <\/span>Urbana <\/span><\/i>meetings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the meetings took place in my office where we just sat on the floor to fit,\u201d Sendin said. \u201cIt was a small group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazine launched its debut volume in 2008 with a limited print run of 100 copies. Eventually, students learned how to navigate intellectual property rights and sharpen their design skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fifteen years later, they are among the nation\u2019s elite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbana\u2019s <\/span><\/i>awards include back-to-back Gold Crown Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, two first-place Pinnacle awards from the College Media Association and a first-place general excellence recognition from the Florida College Systems Publications Association last March.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbanites have also won first-place individual awards from the ACP, CSPA and FCSPA in categories like short stories, poetry, creative writing, editing, artwork design and photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, their efforts earned them a coveted <\/span>Innovation Pacemaker Award<\/span><\/a><\/span> in October of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Building A Community<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Students who have participated in <\/span>Urbana <\/span><\/i>say the magazine has shaped their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicole Viloria started her first year of college pursuing an associate’s degree in veterinary sciences. She joined the magazine to explore her love for creative writing and storytelling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After working on the publication\u2019s podcast and writing segments for the magazine, Viloria was tantalized by how <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> connected to the Little Havana community that surrounds the campus. Inspired by her experiences, she changed her major to English and is now one of <\/span>Urbana\u2019s<\/span><\/i> co-editor-in-chiefs.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The 19-year-old credits Sendin with being instrumental in her journey, often receiving constructive criticism and reassurance from the long-time professor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor Sendin is someone who really cares,\u201d said Viloria, a sophomore in the Honors College. \u201cShe’s understanding, passionate and really cares about making a difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, Viloria and her team, which includes co-editor-in-chief Maria Alejandra Albarracin, aim to revamp <\/span>Urbana\u2019s<\/span><\/i> TikTok<\/span><\/a><\/span> presence and host more collaborative events with other clubs and organizations at Padr\u00f3n Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

For students like Erika Hernandez, <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> offers a sense of community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the heavy workload and strict deadlines, the tight-knit group thrives on strong communication and encouragement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a supportive environment,\u201d said Hernandez, a second-year psychology student. \u201cWe accept all kinds of ideas since we really want people to express themselves freely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Stefani Davila echoes Hernandez\u2019s feelings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During her tenure as <\/span>Urbana\u2019s <\/span><\/i>co-editor-in-chief last year, she improved her management skills, efficiently planning meetings and late-night editing sessions. <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI learned that things work best when there is desire and heart,\u201d said Davila, a <\/span>Jack Kent Cooke Scholar<\/span><\/a><\/span> studying business administration and management at Emerson College in Boston.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

The Final Chapter\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Like many of her students, Sendin has dedicated her heart to education and community service.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

After earning a bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree in English language and literature from FIU, she has served as a professor at Padr\u00f3n Campus for more than two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

A staunch advocate for student engagement, she founded a bevy of clubs including a Hermione\u2019s Army Chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance (now called Fandom Forward), the Imagination Federation Service Club and the <\/span>Sigma Kappa Delta Gamma Eta Chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her leadership efforts have earned her two endowed teaching chair awards and a Fulbright scholarship to the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of MDC, Sendin jump-started initiatives such as Tengo un Sue\u00f1o and Hermandad MayKnoll High School\u2014two projects that raised more than $50,000 combined to educate children in rural Nicaragua.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sendin\u2019s most treasured memories are connected to <\/span>Urbana\u2019s <\/span><\/i>alumni.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She has attended weddings, baby showers and received regular updates about her former students’ professional and personal endeavors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Professor Sendin\u2019s] passion for her profession goes beyond the classroom,\u201d said Daniela Hernandez, who led the web design team for Vol. 13 of <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>. \u201cHer unconditional support led me to always try and seize opportunities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the future, Sendin hopes to participate in the IREX Global Solutions Sustainability Challenge and potentially start another publication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But she said <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i> will remain in her heart\u2014forever.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I hope that I will see it with happiness and not with sadness\u201d, said Sendin as she tearfully recalled her time at <\/span>Urbana.<\/span><\/i> \u201cI’m not the advisor anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
