{"id":33335,"date":"2022-11-15T12:00:27","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=33335"},"modified":"2022-11-15T15:50:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-15T20:50:04","slug":"life-in-prison-is-a-fair-sentence-for-parkland-shooter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/life-in-prison-is-a-fair-sentence-for-parkland-shooter\/","title":{"rendered":"Life In Prison Is A Fair Sentence For Parkland Shooter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years ago, our community witnessed one of the most heinous acts of indiscriminate hatred when Nikolas Cruz conducted a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/live-updates\/parkland-nikolas-cruz\/?id=91883130\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">On Nov. 2<\/span><\/a>, the grueling trial of Cruz came to an end when he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a portion of the general public, including Governor Ron DeSantis, wanted Cruz to be subjected to the death penalty, his sentence is ultimately fitting for his crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ruling means Cruz will spend the rest of his days locked away, reflecting on the choices that led to his demise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will have to recall the faces and names of those who he murdered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People believe keeping him alive is an act of mercy he doesn\u2019t deserve. However, think about what it would mean to spend your entire life behind bars\u2014knowing you will never leave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, that helps you understand the gravity of Cruz\u2019s sentence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it\u2019s impossible to predict Cruz\u2019s future, it\u2019s known that he will be transferred to a highly secured correctional facility containing other high-profile dangerous criminals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will not be isolated, meaning that Cruz will constantly be looking over his shoulder and in constant risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a commissary account until restitutions, prosecution costs and sheriff\u2019s office costs are fully paid, Cruz\u2019s prospects of making friends will be nullified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His precarious situation represents a lifetime of uncertainty and fear\u2014the same emotions he evoked in his high <a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/school-is-for-learning-not-massacre\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">school<\/span><\/a> when he began his massacre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capital punishment is the easy way out. Killing Cruz would deny him the opportunity to process shame and guilt while he comprehends what he\u2019s done. Additionally, it would rid him of the moral obligation he owes to his victims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death comes quickly and easily. Cruz does not deserve that. He deserves time to reflect on how he ruined the lives of those he murdered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, he should yearn for a way out and wonder who he could have been\u2014just like the victims\u2019 families will wonder what their loved ones could have achieved before Cruz took their lives in cold blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the ruling settled, my heart goes out to the survivors and mourners of the Parkland tragedy.
