The mechanical worker features two upper circular platforms that transport orders to customers and a bottom level to place dirty dishes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s adorable,\u201d said Treminio, a first-year education student at Wolfson Campus who visits the caf\u00e9 nearly every day. &#8220;It&#8217;s really interesting seeing a robot [moving] around like that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The robot, which will be named by students via a social media contest that will be held next semester, is part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-culinary-institutes-cafe-reopens-for-the-first-time-after-the-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">recent makeover the Miami Culinary Institute Caf\u00e9<\/span> <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has undergone that includes a revamped menu, kitchen and an expanded seating area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff charge the robot overnight and it\u2019s ready the next day for a full shift. The robot is programmed to say \u201cyour order is here\u201d after deliveries, \u201cexcuse me\u201d if someone obstructs its path or to wish someone a \u201chappy birthday.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Every now and then I pretend to talk to it when I say &#8216;hey, what&#8217;s up&#8217; and it just walks away from me,&#8221; said Crispin Quintana, who earned an associate\u2019s degree in computer science from Wolfson Campus last year but still visits the caf\u00e9 three times a week. &#8220;He&#8217;s a little cold.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea to use the robot was discussed last Fall semester when Carlos Gazitua, president of the Miami-based restaurant chain <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sergios.com\/\">Sergio&#8217;s<\/a><\/span>\u2014who uses the apparatus\u2014recommended the MCI reach out to Bear Robotics, a California-based company that sells serving robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esther \u201cShelly\u201d Smith Fano, who oversees MDC\u2019s culinary and hospitality programs, secured a discounted monthly rate\u2014$699\u2014for the robot. The cost is paid for by proceeds earned from the caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere have been customers who order extra food just to see the robot one more time,\u201d Fano said. \u201cIt\u2019s innovative, it\u2019s very \u2018now.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to its debut in September, the robot was manually programmed by Bear Robotics\u2014a three-day-long process\u2014so it could navigate the MCI Caf\u00e9\u2019s floor plan. During that period, caf\u00e9 workers were trained on how to operate the device.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MCI plans to expand its arsenal of robots. They are looking for a motorized machine that can clean the recently opened simulated hotel room in building 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a cool bot,\u201d said Rafael Toledo, who was visiting the caf\u00e9 recently. &#8220;That little robot is just a small part of the technology infrastructure that Miami is building.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Caf\u00e9 is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students and employees receive a 10 percent discount on all meals this semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff writer Jaime Blanco Pinto contributed to this story.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jaire Treminio was picking up food at the Miami Culinary Institute Caf\u00e9 when she stumbled upon something rather unusual.\u00a0 A three-and-half-foot white robot was delivering food to customers at a slow but steady pace.
