When Jose Navas\u2019 parents moved to Miami from Nicaragua in 1985, they sold porcelain figurines, dishware and bathroom decorations at the now-defunct Flagler Flea Market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by his childhood, Navas, <\/span>now a rising filmmaker, <\/span>developed <\/span>Awake Before Dawn<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, an 18-minute short film that narrates the story of a single mother with two sons<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Santi and Luca<\/span>\u2014struggling to make a living selling purses, clothing and candles <\/span>at the Opa Locka Flea Market.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a sweet family story about struggle, survival and love,\u201d said Navas, who created his own production company nine years ago named FlickHouse Studios.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navas,38, hopes to make the movie available to audiences nationwide later this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Awake Before Dawn <\/span><\/i>started as a pitch for the Indeed\u2019s Rising Voices film fellowship before Navas decided to self-produce the film after expanding the script to 10 pages.<\/span><\/p>\n

To make the movie, Navas, who previously directed <\/span>Beat Lingo<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i><\/span>With His Eyes Closed<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/a>and <\/span>El Balsero<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, <\/span><\/i>reached out to filmmakers Carlos Andujar and Vanessa Gimenez to produce the project. Andujar and Gimenez, who both have Miami Dade College ties, previously worked with Navas on <\/span>Beat Lingo<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>With His Eyes Closed<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving to work hard and having strong perseverance is relatable to me,\u201d said Andujar, who is pursuing an associate\u2019s degree in English at Miami Dade College. \u201cThat was the biggest interest for me during [<\/span>Awake Before Dawn<\/span><\/i>].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Andujar and Gimenez were tasked with casting, scouting for filming locations and overseeing the project\u2019s logistics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before starting production, the movie encountered its first obstacles. A month before filming started, the Opa Locka Flea Market closed its doors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re like \u2018oh my god like we’re going to have to find another flea market,” said Gimenez, who served a two-year stint as <\/span>a staff writer and photographer<\/span><\/a><\/span> for <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> before graduating from Eduardo J. P\u00e1dron Campus in 2020. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know what we were going to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Three weeks after receiving the closing notice, the Opa Locka Flea Market gave the production team a 90-day extension to finish <\/span>Awake Before Dawn<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were literally fighting with time,\u201d said Navas, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in film from the Miami International University of Arts & Design in 2003. \u201cThat motivated me because I knew I had an opportunity to capture a piece of this flea market and tell a story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that was not the last hurdle the team would face.<\/span><\/p>\n

A week before filming started, the crew\u2019s main camera was shipped to New York for emergency maintenance. Staff also had to arrive at the flea market by 5 a.m. to set up tents, props and equipment to accommodate the schedule of the movie\u2019s two child actors\u2014ages 6 and 9.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with minors always has some challenges,\u201d said Angel Barroeta, who served as the film\u2019s photography director. \u201cWe have to work fast and do as much as we can when we have their attention and energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In total, the film\u2019s production was completed in five months with a $13,000 budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[<\/span>Awake Before Dawn<\/span><\/i>] was supposed to be a very small project and it became something really big and something really beautiful,\u201d said Gimenez, who graduated from Emerson College in Boston last year and now works as a technical production coordinator at NBCUniversal. \u201cThis made me realize how much I like telling stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The group has high hopes for the film. On Jan. 14, they will host a private screening at Cascabel Studios in Doral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Navas said he recently learned that the film was selected to be part of the Miami Film Festival, which will be held from March 3 to 12.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted it to be seen here first,\u201d Navas said. \u201cThis story is a Miami story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
