You often hear about it: \u201cthe video game adaptation curse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The dreaded prophecy puts the fear of God into gamers and non-gamers alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It proclaims the impossibility of materializing a game\u2019s story into film or television series form. Many have tried and failed, either in a <\/span>spectacular blaze of glory<\/span><\/a><\/span> or a <\/span>painfully average snooze fest<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

HBO\u2019s <\/span>The Last of Us<\/span><\/i>, based on the 2013 Sony exclusive of the same name, is now being touted as the exception to the rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t take a rocket scientist to see why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you mix the creator of the HBO series <\/span>Chernobyl<\/span><\/i>, Pedro Pascal, and an already masterful script, anything short of success would knock the Earth off its axis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its release on Jan. 15, the show has held a 9.4\/10 rating on IMDb. Its 4.7 million premiere viewership was also HBO\u2019s second-largest since their 2010 debut of <\/span>Boardwalk Empire<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But with overwhelming praise comes unwarranted negativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My critique is not an empty, old-head soliloquy; it\u2019s a call to action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why can\u2019t these two forms of storytelling co-exist? Most importantly, when will video games be seen as a legitimate expression of art?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gone are the days of <\/span>trashy movie tie-ins<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>in-your-face product placement<\/span><\/a><\/span>; <\/span>the Last of Us <\/span><\/i>was not some miraculous flash in the pan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was built upon Naughty Dog\u2019s\u2014the game\u2019s development team\u2014previous high watermark with the <\/span>Uncharted <\/span><\/i>series and a craving for a zombie-apocalyptic setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So imagine how backward it was when Sony decided to turn <\/span>Uncharted<\/span><\/i>, a game already established as an Indiana Jones-style blockbuster, into a movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am not against adapting these game titles to the silver screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the contrary, words cannot describe my happiness knowing HBO perfectly encapsulates the source material for <\/span>The Last of Us<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, it\u2019s difficult to shake that longing to replay the original game as you watch a 1:1 remake unfold on TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

When books are adapted into a film, the justification is adding visuals and sound to words on the page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Video games, however, are an amalgamation of the senses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The story only progresses if you pick up the controller and act upon it. Linear or open-world, custom or fixed, if you don\u2019t push those buttons in the correct order, kaput.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biases aside, not everyone can afford to invest time and cash to nab a PlayStation console and a pricey triple-A studio game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Digesting a story is much more convenient by taking your remote and clicking HBO Max. However, fans of the show who haven\u2019t played the game should respect the video game realm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Video games are their own cinematic experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With <\/span>The Last of Us<\/span><\/i> reaching a wider audience, critics and viewers are perceiving the story as the \u201creal deal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The only thing we can hope for is the changing perception of video games.<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, two can win.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
