If no candidate earns a majority, the one with the least votes is eliminated and their votes are redistributed until a candidate wins a majority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the dominant voting method is the first-past-the-post system, which decides the winning candidate based on who gets the most votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This outdated system makes it almost impossible for third parties and independents to penetrate the two dominating parties\u2014Democratic and Republican.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranked choice voting would fix this by letting voters pick a third-party candidate first and then a major-party candidate if needed, resulting in a winner with wider support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing this method would allow political movements like the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libertarian<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/reformparty.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reform<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forwardparty.com\/\">Forward <\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parties to have a shot at politics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar proportional representation electoral systems would go a step further by ensuring all political viewpoints are heard, which is something that doesn\u2019t happen in the current winner-takes-all system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the World Population Review, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/countries-with-proportional-representation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">81 countries<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the European Parliament of the European Union use proportional representation\u2014which ensures political parties are represented in equivalence to their electoral results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite that, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis placed a ban on ranked choice voting in the state by passing bill <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/524\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB524<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida and Tennessee are the only two states to ban ranked choice voting, despite a 2007 referendum in Sarasota, a city south of Tampa, having a 77.6% approval to switch to this method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear governor DeSantis\u2019 move was done to secure Republican control in Florida. His move directly contradicts his claim of promoting electoral freedom in the &#8220;free state of Florida.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is not just a Republican issue. Many establishment Democrats have also voiced opposition to ranked voting because it can disrupt their election victories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While states like Maine and Alaska have gone in the right direction by implementing ranked choice voting in all elections, that is still not enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States needs to examine ways to improve its democratic processes.
