Celebrating four decades of movies, the <\/span>Miami Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> returns this year with in-person and remote screenings featuring more than 140 films from across the globe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The 10-day festival will take place March 3 to 12 at Downtown Miami\u2019s Silverspot Cinema, the Coral Gables Art Cinema and the Bill Cosford Cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[I\u2019m] so excited to be celebrating [this] major milestone,\u201d said the MFF Director of Programming Lauren Cohen. \u201cWe’re bringing you one of our biggest programs in years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival will start on March 4\u00a0 with <\/span>Somewhere in Queens<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, directed by <\/span>Ray Romano, <\/b>who is best known for the sitcom <\/span>Everybody Loves Raymond<\/span><\/i>. The comedy follows Leo Russo (played by Romano) as he supports his son\u2019s dream to become a basketball player.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s<\/span> one of 16 productions competing for the Jordan Ressler First Feature Award, which presents $10,000 to the best feature movie from a debuting film director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another film up for the award is <\/span>Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>. Based on the novel of the same name, the film is directed by <\/span>Aitch Alberto<\/b>. The coming-of-age romance stars <\/span>Eugenio Derbez<\/b> and <\/span>Eva Longoria<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other competitions in the festival include the Knight Made in MIA Award, which provides $30,000 to the best film produced in South Florida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tom Musca<\/b>\u2019s <\/span>Dying to Direct<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, which depicts a story reflecting the process of grief and features <\/span>Caleb Scott<\/b> and <\/span>Valeska Castillo,<\/b> will be competing for the award. The movie was co-produced by Musca, who teaches screenwriting at the University of Miami, and his former student Tony Mendez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’m happy to make films here [in Miami],\u201d Musca said. \u201cIt’s really a privilege to be able to work with the students that I have personally trained.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival will also debut the Goya Quick Bites competition, which awards $2,500 to a film of fewer than 20 minutes demonstrating the importance of food and culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three MDC students will participate in this year\u2019s <\/span>CinemaSlam Film<\/span><\/a><\/span> competition. Samuel Vargas’ <\/span>As I Promised You<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Andres Monsalve Roca<\/b>‘s<\/span> Cash-Out<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Michael Jimenez<\/b>‘s <\/span>En Las Sombras<\/span><\/i> will compete for the $1,000 award rewarding student films created for collegiate coursework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CinemaSlam winners will be announced on March 5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s festival features more than 30 international productions from countries like Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Pakistan, North Macedonia and Brazil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love about this year’s lineup is how diverse and globe-spanning it is,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cAny country you could think of for the most part makes some appearance here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Created by Italian director <\/span>Carolina Cavalli<\/b>, <\/span>Amanda<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> tells the story of a re-ignited childhood friendship. <\/span>Piece of My Heart<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>\u2014a Dutch film about two young ballerinas who befriend each other while competing for the top spot in their ballet company\u2014will have its North American premiere at the festival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Produced in France, Australia and the United States, <\/span>Carmen<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> is a musical drama depicting the story of a young Mexican immigrant woman\u2019s journey to reach America. The film is directed by <\/span>Benjamin Millepied<\/b>, who served as the choreographer in 2010\u2019s <\/span>Black Swan<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Aside from films, the MFF will host guest speaker events with <\/span>Heidi Bibbins<\/b>, the costume designer of HBO\u2019s popular <\/span>Euphoria<\/span><\/i> show, and <\/span>Chelsea Fairless<\/b> and <\/span>Lauren Garroni<\/b>\u2014the co-hosts of the <\/span>Every Outfit<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> podcast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival will close on March 11 with <\/span>The Lost King<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>.<\/span> Directed by two-time Oscar nominee <\/span>Stephen Frears<\/b>, the movie tells the story of how King Richard III\u2019s life is re-examined after the uncovering of his remains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
