Picture the most grotesque string of images the human mind can conjure up\u2014a hodgepodge of deviant euphoria that makes your skin crawl, beg and plead for life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whatever popped into your head is nothing more than a draft of a David Cronenberg script. I mention his name because the phrase \u201clike father, like son\u201d has come alive with Brandon Cronenberg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the saying goes, the apple doesn\u2019t fall far from the tree and in the case of <\/span>Infinity Pool<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, the apple is some wicked-forbidden fruit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Infinity Pool <\/span><\/i>is Brandon Cronenberg\u2019s coming-out party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While his previous two films\u2014<\/span>Antiviral<\/span><\/i> and<\/span> Possessor<\/span><\/i>\u2014were nothing to scoff at, the level of promotion and star power for this latest experimental venture is miles above. However, this is not an example of style over substance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The choice of swanky surrealism on Brandon\u2019s part is no <\/span>Crimes of the Future<\/span><\/i>. He has broken the nepotism baby wall created by his father.<\/span><\/p>\n

With <\/span>Infinity Pool<\/span><\/i>, all eyes are on Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd and Mia Goth. Their riveting chemistry is rooted in the power dynamics of their relationship which, coincidentally enough, is all about power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Played by Skarsg\u00e5rd, James Foster is a failed author who relies on his wife and father-in-law as a cash cow for his pipe dream. While he isn\u2019t a menace to society, he realizes he wants to be when he meets Gabi, who is played by Goth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gabi, a libertine socialite, lives a life full of what James desires most: hedonism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the film, there are an array of shots that hone in on Foster\u2019s facial expressions as he\u2019s slowly inducted into Gabi\u2019s cult and state of mind. One long take in particular begins behind a semi-closed door and continuously inches toward James\u2019 face until you are looking directly into his soul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Infinity Pool\u2019<\/span><\/i>s cinematography has a purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s up close and personal; it doesn’t let the viewer breathe, replicating the overwhelming feeling experienced by Foster as he resists urges of degeneracy during his transformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is where Goth\u2019s performance as Gabi steals the show with the curtains included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She demands your attention whenever she\u2019s in a frame. Her ability to switch from seductively manipulative to uncomfortably psychotic in the blink of an eye makes her a definite force of nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s genuinely frightening how she can deliver black-hearted dialogue toward James. There\u2019s no doubting Goth\u2019s magnetizing acting alone makes <\/span>Infinity Pool<\/span><\/i> worth the watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, the movie has much more than stellar performances and quality shot composition. Especially when Brandon Cronenberg is in full swing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t believe me? There\u2019s an epilepsy warning that plays before the picture even starts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The imagery he presents to the audience is not for the faint of heart. Vomit, voyeurism and hyper-violence are just the tips of the body horror iceberg that <\/span>Infinity Pool<\/span><\/i> has in store.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Detractors say the visuals are only smoke and mirrors with no real substance, but I disagree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, Brandon Cronenberg doesn\u2019t mind being overly hedonistic while picking apart the lust of elitists, but isn\u2019t that the point? Once James gets his first taste of that lifestyle, he tries to reject it because deep down, he knows that\u2019s who he is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As in <\/span>Full Metal Jacket<\/span><\/i>, Gabi does to James what Vietnam does to Joker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the best way to describe <\/span>Infinity Pool<\/span><\/i> as a whole. A tough pill to swallow, but a swallowed pill nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\n
