All of them weren\u2019t supposed to win. When life gives you the devil\u2019s hand, the words of Kenny Rogers serve as a reminder to <\/span>know when to walk away<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet for Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, known by the stage name of Logic, letting the cycle repeat itself would cause inevitable death.<\/span><\/p>\n

College Park<\/span><\/i>, his latest concept album, puts the listener in the shoes of a young and hungry Hall as he looks to turn lemons into white wine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concept albums are nothing new to Logic, who\u2019s never been a stranger to cinematic storytelling and ambitious themes\u2014even if they can suffer from having too many cooks in the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Logic is at his best when combining personal anecdotes with speedy flows and witty one-liners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why his early mixtapes and records like <\/span>No Pressure<\/span><\/i> aren\u2019t just lauded by critics and fans despite containing the pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance that every David versus Goliath tale has: relatability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>College Park<\/span><\/i>, Logic returns to his roots with a captivating rags-to-riches story, which also features renowned rapper <\/span>Redman<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new album finds beauty in simplicity, choosing to present a narrative of simpler times in Logic\u2019s hometown at face value instead of forced subtlety. The sincere honesty in his retelling of impoverishment adds weight to his words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the skits don\u2019t always intertwine seamlessly with the song topics, their essence is stamped on every track with a strong scent, even if they\u2019re a little too long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A compelling concept doesn\u2019t always equal a thrilling album, it requires a bit more elbow grease. However, Logic doesn\u2019t waste any space on this project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clone Wars III<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> contains all of his signature Logic-isms, from the flows and cadences to the introspective lyrics of wearing your influences on your sleeve as he declares that \u201cthere\u2019s only twelve notes to a scale.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redpill VII<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> follows right after with razor-sharp wit and double-take punchlines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bars such as \u201cflame on wax like the wick is lit\u201d or \u201cspit so hard I knock a tooth out\u201d prove once again that he is a prime time, upper-echelon lyricist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can you not be a master of wordplay with lines like \u201cmy vision go over their head, like Klu Klux Klan sheets,\u201d a double entendre so audaciously clever that it left my jaw on the floor with shock and awe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

College Park<\/span><\/i> is too long-winded on certain cuts. The lack of a second verse on <\/span>Playwright <\/span><\/i>or <\/span>Insipio <\/span><\/i>is rather perplexing\u2014especially on <\/span>Village Slum<\/span><\/i>, a somber diary entry examining the woes of generational addiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing these songs to a screeching halt to fill gaps with skits or instrumentals felt as though Logic was keeping his training weights on instead of running a full marathon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, when those instrumentals thrust their foot into the door, they blow it off the hinge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With help from his producer lounge\u20146ix and PoST\u2014the beats on <\/span>College Park <\/span><\/i>are a punchy flurry of love taps that don\u2019t blow out your eardrums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This angelic cohesion is created through a variety of <\/span>piano keys<\/span><\/a><\/span>, soul samples and synth lines mixed together with <\/span>background vocals<\/span><\/a><\/span> and an occasional DJ scratch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lightyear<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, the album\u2019s outro, is the golden child of the entire 67-minute runtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rap, skit and ballad hybrid finds Logic finally setting the record straight on his decision to \u201cgo pop\u201d in 2017, detailing his desire of wanting to \u201cfeed his family for generations\u201d and spreading his message of peace, love and positivity worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He then goes into an acoustic serenade at the end of the song, triumphantly singing that it \u201ctook a lightyear to find [himself] again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lightyear <\/span><\/i>signifies a watershed moment for the Maryland matador.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To Logic, winning isn\u2019t just making a name for yourself, it\u2019s financial and creative freedom.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

College Park <\/span><\/i>is his last crusade as that child in the basement, and boy is it quite the emotional hoorah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
