Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Miami Film Festival returned to entertain moviegoers and film directors alike, with more than 140 movie screenings and nine film competitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 10-day festival was hosted at Downtown Miami\u2019s Silverspot Cinema, the Coral Gables Art Cinema and the Bill Cosford Cinema from March 3 to 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe reception was amazing,\u201d said Lauren Cohen, the MFF Director of Programming. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see everybody getting together and enjoying movies together.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival kicked off on March 3 with the screening of <\/span>Ray Romano\u2019s<\/b><\/span> Somewhere in Queens<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/i>The film tells the story of Leo Russo, an Italian-American construction worker helping his son achieve his dream to be an athlete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll walks of life should be able to not only relate to, but see themselves in this core family,\u201d said<\/span> Franco Maicas, who starred as Romano\u2019s on-screen nephew Luigi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On March 5, actor <\/span>Nicolas Cage<\/b><\/span> was honored with the Film Festival\u2019s Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award. The next day, he held a Q&A session with film students at North Campus where he discussed his acting career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mexican actor <\/span>Diego Luna<\/b><\/span>, known for his roles in <\/span>Narcos: Mexico <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,<\/span><\/i> was honored on March 6 for his accomplishments in the film industry with the inaugural Variety Virtuoso Award.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making An Impact: Renowned Broadway and film actor John Leguizamo received the Variety Impact Award at the Miami Film Festival on March 11. MARIA BADIA \/ THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Colombian actor, comedian and film producer <\/span>John Leguizamo<\/span><\/strong>, who has a new documentary, <\/span>Leguizamo Does America<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, received the MFF\u2019s Variety Impact Award on March 11.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Multiple productions competed for the Film Festival’s nine competitions, which included the Goya Quick Bites Short Film Award, Jordan Ressler First Feature Award and the Knight Made in MIA Feature Film Award, which presents $45,000 to a film portraying South Florida culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the <\/span>Made in MIA Feature Film <\/span>prize was shared between two entries: <\/span>Hansel Porras Garc\u00eda\u2019s <\/b><\/span>Febrero<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, which follows two long-lost friends as they reconnect with each other and their Cuban origins, and <\/span>Lilo Vilaplana <\/b><\/span>and <\/span>Camilo Vilaplana\u2019s<\/span> <\/b>Plantadas<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, which centers on three women who restore democracy to their country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMiami is the capital of Latin America,” Porras Garc\u00eda said. “It\u2019s amazing that people can see a film in their own language, but within a completely different community.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Another competitor for the award was <\/span>Tony Mendez<\/span> <\/b>and <\/span>Tom Musca\u2019s<\/b><\/span> Dying to Direct, <\/span><\/i>a short film that tackled themes like grief, love and cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe emotions associated with end-of-life issues are much more complex than most people assume,\u201d said Musca, who has featured three other films throughout the festival\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

International productions also made their way into the MFF programming. This year, the festival displayed more than 30 films from countries like Spain, Brazil, Pakistan and North Macedonia.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always super important to have a really diverse program,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cIt really gives people the opportunity to connect with cultures they may not know a lot about through cinema.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Carmen<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, a movie depicting the immigration journey of a young woman to the United States, marked the directorial debut of renowned choreographer <\/span>Benjamin Millepied<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Belgian film directors<\/span> Jean-Pierre Dardenne <\/b><\/span>and <\/span>Luc Dardenne <\/b><\/span>also showcased <\/span>Tori and Lokita<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, a production that revolves around two African teenagers during their migrant journey to Belgium. Last year, the film won the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s 75th Anniversary Award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe movie makes you feel a lot of anger toward people in society who don\u2019t help migrants,\u201d said Joely Mbundu, who starred as Lokita in the Belgian-French thriller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The MFF closed on March 11 with a screening of <\/span>The Lost King<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, a 109-minute film depicting the reexamining of King Richard III\u2019s life following an archeological discovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMiami Film Festival is just really, really good at highlighting its local filmmakers,\u201d said filmmaker <\/span>Mariana Serrano<\/span>,<\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/b>who showcased <\/span>Arroz, Leche, Y Powerball<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 in the Goya Quick Bites short film competition. \u201cIt\u2019s really about being able to meet people and [forming] connections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
