{"id":34798,"date":"2023-06-12T16:34:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T20:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=34798"},"modified":"2023-06-13T11:06:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T15:06:20","slug":"americas-car-centric-culture-is-a-cancer-that-ravages-our-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/americas-car-centric-culture-is-a-cancer-that-ravages-our-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"America\u2019s Car-Centric Culture Is A Cancer That Ravages Our Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our country\u2019s biggest problems include gun violence, racism and wealth inequality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are all pressing societal issues, our obsession with cars is just as bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the invention of the Model T in the early 20th century, the automobile has become a staple of American culture because of the \u201cfreedom\u201d it affords us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of World War II, the popularity of cars exploded as veterans returned to a society that embraced suburban living.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the United States <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/acs\/www\/about\/why-we-ask-each-question\/vehicles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">census data<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals that more than 90 percent of households own at least one automobile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was once a useful invention has become a dominant way of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting in the 1950s and 60s, the rise of automobiles and suburban living led President Eisenhower to pass the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By incentivizing the creation of the highway, providing $9 for every $1 each state spent on road infrastructure, cities throughout the country began to develop ambitious roadway projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That prompted one of the most brutal instances of social displacement as cities looking to build new highways used these projects to destroy minority communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here in Miami, the Machiavellian plan to create I-95 led to the pulverization and fragmentation of Overtown, which at the time was a vibrant African-American community known as the Harlem of the South.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, we weren\u2019t the only city to face this. <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/specials\/america-highways-inequality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many others<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bulldozed minority neighborhoods to create highway projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating highways and advocating for cars also led us to destroy our downtown areas, creating a sea of parking lots catering to suburbanites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demolition of the urbanized and cultural hearts of our cities was complemented by the unstoppable tumor of urban sprawl, which fills our cities with a soul crushing infrastructure that demonizes pedestrians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t have to travel far to see how this is an issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from South Beach, Downtown Miami and places like Coral Gables, we are filled with an endless array of single-family houses and commercial spaces, which have parking lots bigger than the stores themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city\u2019s sprawl is devouring our natural habitat and making public transportation unreliable due to the long distances it has to cover. This causes people to depend on cars and creates the traffic we all love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this the American Dream? Being stuck in traffic while wallowing in carbon monoxide?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us reading this article drive a car because there is no other alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gluttonous and selfish oil industry tycoons are aware of this so they utilize their wealth to <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/19\/climate\/koch-brothers-public-transit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobby<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against public transportation and rail infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, money is all oil and car-centered industries care about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They don\u2019t care about environmental destruction, the 42,000 families in the U.S. who lost a loved one in a car accident <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/traffic-crash-death-estimates-2022#:~:text=The%20National%20Highway%20Traffic%20Safety,42%2C939%20fatalities%20reported%20for%202021.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last year<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the low-income communities that spend half their paycheck to travel to buy groceries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most infuriating aspect of all of this is that we aren\u2019t fighting enough to reverse the cancerous car-centric policies plaguing our society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, many cities like <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/apr\/29\/texas-highway-expansions-project-displacements-protests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2023\/02\/28\/cfx-provides-updates-on-sr-408-expansion-project-in-orlando\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orlando<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to stubbornly add more lanes to existing highways even though the practice <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/worsens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsens traffic<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, car-advocacy groups throughout the country have <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/15-minute-cities-conspiracy-climate-denier\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rallied against<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> urbanism and public transport since apparently common-sense policies advocating for better livability are \u201ccommunism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cars don\u2019t give us freedom. They create an illusion of autonomy that\u2019s backed up by a cycle of destructive and discriminatory policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom would be the ability to travel anywhere using public transit. We don\u2019t have that. What we have is a policy of house arrest unless you have a metal box. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like cars and everything associated with them, that\u2019s fine. What is not okay is building our cities to cater to the needs of a fragment of the population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the past three generations, we have destroyed the livability of our cities for the sake of cars.
