{"id":34989,"date":"2023-07-05T11:30:27","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T15:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=34989"},"modified":"2023-07-11T11:56:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T15:56:49","slug":"affirmative-action-should-be-based-on-socioeconomic-status-not-race-or-gender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/affirmative-action-should-be-based-on-socioeconomic-status-not-race-or-gender\/","title":{"rendered":"Affirmative Action Should Be Based On Socioeconomic Status, Not Race Or Gender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court does not shy away from controversy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, it continued to make history with decisive rulings on student debt forgiveness and whether businesses can refuse to serve gay customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the decisions, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marked the end of affirmative action\u2014a policy that granted special consideration to underrepresented minorities in the college admission process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The removal of such policy sounds counterintuitive toward promoting equity, but the decision is a step toward promoting a fairer college admissions process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affirmative action originated during the 1960s as part of the Civil Rights Movement. Its first implementation came with Executive Order 11246 which banned employment discrimination based on race, religion or nation of origin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the years, the practice has been utilized to assure collegiate institutions accept a predetermined number of students depending on race. In 1978, the Supreme Court declared that to be unconstitutional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2003, the landmark decision <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grutter v. Bollinger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> determined that schools could take race into account when determining what students to admit. That ruling was valid up until last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During its six-decade life, the policy helped figures like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who ironically fought fiercely to sack the policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being mindful of someone\u2019s race or gender is a noble pursuit for equality, but the practice overlooks an aspect of our life that has a greater influence on our lives\u2014socioeconomic status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As shown by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/education-inequalities-at-the-school-starting-gate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">2017 report<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Economic Policy Institute, a student\u2019s socioeconomic background is the greatest tool to predict their academic performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you grow up in the inner city, your life will consist of dealing with a plethora of social issues many suburbanites will seldom face. For high school students, that means the difference between fighting to stay alive and studying for the SAT.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, one of the things that can be done to replace race-based affirmative action is to instead consider a student\u2019s economic background when applying for college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that most minority groups <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2020\/09\/poverty-rates-for-blacks-and-hispanics-reached-historic-lows-in-2019.html#:~:text=In%202019%2C%20the%20share%20of,share%20in%20the%20general%20population.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tend to fall<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into lower socioeconomic backgrounds, the practice would continue benefiting underrepresented groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Income-based affirmative action would also allow poor white and Asian Americans to have a chance against more affluent college applicants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implementation of this policy should be followed with the swift termination of legacy admissions, a nepotistic practice that gives applicants an advantage if they are related to alumni.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2021\/10\/28\/high-time-to-end-legacy-admissions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">article<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Harvard\u2019s student newspaper, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crimson<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, legacy students had an admissions rate 27 percent higher than their non-legacy counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article also mentioned that out of the legacy freshmen that are admitted to Harvard, nearly a third come from households that earn more than $500,000 a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that practice taking place at most of our top institutions, how can we expect underprivileged and first-generation students to have a fair chance to prove their worth?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amherst College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have ended their legacy admissions policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important that other schools follow that example and work toward implementing an admissions system that fully accounts for a student\u2019s individual life experience.
