{"id":35629,"date":"2023-10-09T16:43:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T20:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=35629"},"modified":"2023-10-13T14:35:47","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T18:35:47","slug":"miami-film-festival-appoints-new-executive-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-film-festival-appoints-new-executive-director\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Film Festival Appoints New Executive Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For James Woolley, attending film festivals has always been a family tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he was six, he went to the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sff.org.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sydney Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Australia with his grandparents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back then, one ticket secured a seat to 50 films for the two-week celebration. Woolley\u2019s family purchased a handful and took turns going to screenings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three decades later, a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single ticket no longer grants access to all the films at a festival, online tickets have replaced physical ones and Woolley is now 38.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the seed planted by his family has fostered his fondness for films\u2014a passion he is bringing to Miami Dade College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolley started as the executive director of the Miami Film Festival on Oct. 2. Jaie Laplante, who led the festival for 12 years, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/for-12-years-he-oversaw-the-miami-film-festival-now-hes-moving-on-laplante\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relinquished that role<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wants to continue the momentum the festival has garnered in the past 40 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to have more audiences discover these movies that we love. We want to have even more filmmakers, actors and writers come out and give talks and presentations to the audience here,\u201d Woolley said. \u201cAnd we want our own local filmmaking community [to] feel like this film festival is their home festival where they can always screen their films.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to his current position, he served as executive director for <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frameline.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frameline<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the largest and longest-running LGBTQ+ film festival in the world based in San Francisco, California, from August of 2019 to September of 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolley started his career as an office administrator for the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mardigras.org.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2009 after graduating from <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mq.edu.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macquarie University<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a bachelor\u2019s in arts, entertainment and media management in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year later, he began working in ticketing for festivals throughout Australia, including Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His life came full circle in February of 2013, when he took a job as the customer relations manager at the Sydney Film Festival\u2014the place that sparked his love for cinema. Three years later, he became the head of marketing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aussie, who said film festivals feed his addiction \u201cto the rush of events,\u201d also served as the manager for the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/queerscreen.org.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mardi Gras Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for four years and as a selection panelist for Flickerfest, a short film festival based in Sydney, for nine years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a seasoned leader of international film festivals, James Woolley immediately stood out among a large and impressive candidate pool,\u201d said Mar\u00eda Carla Chicu\u00e9n, the executive director of cultural affairs at MDC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first project will be leading the 10th edition of <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/gems2023.eventive.org\/schedule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GEMS<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MFF&#8217;s precursor celebration, featuring 26 filmmakers from 14 countries, including Japan, Germany, Mexico and Finland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening night will feature <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L4DvL0UBZPQ\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radical<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drama based on a true story about a teacher in a crime-ridden Mexican town who uses an innovative teaching method to reach his students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other films include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Boy and the Heron <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation set in World War II about a teenage boy\u2019s relocation from Tokyo after his mom\u2019s death, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Settlers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Chilean director Felipe Galvez Haberle, a drama that follows three horsemen as they journey from Patagonia to the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weekend closes with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Holdovers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a comedy directed by Alexander Payne about a New England professor who gets stuck babysitting students on campus during Christmas break and forms a bond with a pupil and the school\u2019s head cook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screenings will be held at MDC\u2019s newly renovated Koubek Memorial Center movie theater in Little Havana and the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/silverspot.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SilverSpot Cinema<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Downtown Miami from Nov. 2 through Nov. 5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolley hopes programming like GEMS will ensure the MFF continues to build a loyal audience and attract the best actors, directors and filmmakers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I love is a place that\u2019s full of potential and [the] Miami Film Festival is full of potential.\u201d Woolley said. \u201cI think there\u2019s nothing but bright futures for us.
