{"id":35761,"date":"2023-10-24T16:32:44","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T20:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=35761"},"modified":"2023-10-25T18:02:18","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T22:02:18","slug":"kendall-campus-to-launch-student-led-general-interest-feature-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/kendall-campus-to-launch-student-led-general-interest-feature-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Kendall Campus To Launch Student-Led General Interest Feature Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Emily Sendin, a professor in the English and communications department at Miami Dade College, transferred to Kendall Campus this fall, she had big aspirations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After years of attending student media conventions, Sendin, who advised <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/urbana-starts-a-new-chapter-after-winning-its-first-magazine-pacemaker\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urbana<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the literary &amp; arts magazine at the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/padron\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014for 15 years, realized the College did not have a general interest magazine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWhy does Miami Dade [College] not have this?\u201d she thought.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sendin is changing that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 49-year-old\u2019s honors leadership course (IDH2003) at Kendall Campus plans to launch<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coalesce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the College\u2019s first student-led general interest feature magazine this spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will serve as the class\u2019 capstone leadership project and present columns, articles, and feature stories. The team also plans to incorporate social media, a podcast and a website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coalesce, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a verb that means to come together to form one mass or whole, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will print twice a year and produce 300 copies per cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The magazine\u2019s dimensions, including page count, size and paper quality, will remain a secret until its launch in January.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the main things we want to do is showcase different backgrounds [and] open people&#8217;s minds to greater knowledge,\u201d said Pedro Callendar, who serves as a writer and part of the marketing team.\u00a0 \u201cAnd what a perfect way to do that from the beginning. They can look up [the meaning of the name] and they learn something new. And that&#8217;s the whole point of our magazine, to learn new things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more than a month, the staff deliberated about what to name the magazine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various names that incorporated the Kendall Campus brand were considered\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendallites<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khaos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014but none felt right, until Sofia Martinez, who serves as the magazine\u2019s layout-design editor, suggested <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coalesce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot only does it have a nice, pretty ring to it, but it also is really meaningful,\u201d said Sofia Vizcarra, the publication\u2019s editor-in-chief. \u201cMore than just the Kendall name, that&#8217;s really who we are. This will be a magazine where students come together to work on these columns and share it with the rest of the MDC community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The magazine will be a happy-medium between hard news and art; a space for students to explore writing while acquiring experience in leadership, design, marketing and social media, Sendin said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coalesce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is slated to print in December,\u00a0 will cover topics of student interest, ranging from arts, sports and culture to social, economic, political and environmental issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese articles, stories and columns are going to be from their own peers,\u201d Vizcarra said. \u201cStories and columns always have a different resonance when it comes from people that are like you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The staff is developing the magazine\u2019s first drafts, color palettes, media kit, logo and website. They have not settled on a theme, but the issue will feature articles on mental health, education, fashion, music and AI ethics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coalesce <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is composed of IDH students, but they hope to open participation in the magazine to the entire Kendall Campus, eventually establishing an office and a class that\u2019s directly related to producing the magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[My goal is] to produce a legacy that serves the Kendall Campus community, raising awareness about issues, opening minds, offering divergent points of view [and] opening a space for dialogue about different issues,\u201d Sendin said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
