Two Miami Dade College publications<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>, Miami Dade College\u2019s collegewide student newspaper, and <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>, the Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus\u2019 literary & arts magazine\u2014won national Pacemaker awards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considered by many as the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate student media, the honor recognizes overall excellence of student work. This year\u2019s contest featured work produced during the 2022-2023 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winners were announced at the 2023 Associated College Press\/College Media Association <\/span>Fall National College Media Convention<\/span><\/span><\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia on Oct. 30.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Reporter <\/span><\/i>received the honor for the third consecutive year in the <\/span>two-year student newspaper category<\/span>. <\/span><\/a>It has won five Pacemakers<\/span>\u20142013, 2014, 2021, 2022 and 2023\u2014<\/span>since its inception in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s amazing to be able to contribute to <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>‘s long-standing legacy of excellence,” said Juan S. Gomez, who served as the paper\u2019s editor-in-chief last school year when the entries were submitted. “It’s not easy to win a Pacemaker, so the fact we’ve done it for three years in a row goes to show the quality of our work.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Notable stories featured in the three issues submitted for judging include: the <\/span>Tower Theater protests<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i><\/span> starting a new chapter after winning its first Magazine Pacemaker award<\/span><\/span><\/a> and a<\/span> story on the director<\/span><\/a><\/span> of<\/span> TRIO support services <\/span><\/a><\/span>getting a second chance at life after receiving a kidney transplant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Pacemaker\"<\/a>
Creative Outlet: Urbana has been the literary & arts magazine of Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus since 2007. NIKOLE VALIENTE\/THE REPORTER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Urbana<\/span><\/i>, which entered its 16th volume in the<\/span> two-year literary arts magazine category<\/span><\/a><\/span>, was the only publication among five finalists to receive the award in that division this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazine, which was led by co-editors <\/span>Nicole Viloria<\/span><\/span><\/a> and Maria Alejandra Albarracin, received the honor for the second year in a row. In 2021, the publication also won an Innovation Pacemaker for their creative efforts to disseminate information across their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s theme<\/span>\u2014<\/span>collage<\/span>\u2014<\/span>was explored through a medley of poems, short stories, languages, photographs and digital illustrations to showcase different entities coming together to represent a greater whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Volume 16<\/span><\/span><\/a> featured works such as Jenna Kay Dub\u00e9\u2019s poem <\/span>Through the Eyes of a Child<\/span><\/i> coupled with a photograph of a boy laughing at the beach titled <\/span>Laughter Overflow <\/span><\/i>by Viloria<\/span>,<\/span><\/i> and a short story by Erika Hern\u00e1ndez entitled <\/span>Rosie\u2019s Lovely Day Out<\/span><\/i>, paired with a photograph of a tree by Joseph Mu\u00f1oz and an illustration of a dog on a field by Camila Ramirez.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis [Pacemaker] is significant because it’s the highest honor for collegiate writing and it’s also something that we put a lot of work into,\u201d said Leidy Padrino, who is Urbana\u2019s editor-in-chief this year. \u201cI know myself and the rest of the staff that worked on 16, we were working until the very last minute. The editors-in-chief of that volume, especially, had a very long and hard job to do. But just to be a part of that and to see all the efforts we put in be rewarded, it was incredible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
