{"id":35969,"date":"2023-11-23T10:03:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T15:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=35969"},"modified":"2023-11-23T10:03:16","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T15:03:16","slug":"aquaponics-club-tackles-environmental-sustainability-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/aquaponics-club-tackles-environmental-sustainability-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Aquaponics Club Tackles Environmental Sustainability Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2025, half of the world\u2019s population could be <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/wash\/water-scarcity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing water scarcity<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what does that mean for an agricultural industry that uses <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/htt.io\/water-usage-in-the-agricultural-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of gallons of water daily<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was the question Alexa Bencomo and Jonathan Roa Clavelo, two former North Campus Honors College scholars, posed two years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo approached Stephen Nesvacil, the program coordinator for the Earth Ethics Institute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an organization that promotes environmental sustainability<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014at North Campus, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requesting information about aquaponics, an agriculture system that combines fish rearing, artificial light, the use of fish excrement and soilless plants to grow food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That process uses nearly <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/kids.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/frym.2022.707801#:~:text=Aquaponics%20uses%20up%20to%2090,grow%20much%20faster%20%5B3%5D!\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 percent less water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nesvacil, who knew there were several empty 500-gallon aquaponics tanks in the garden next to the Science Complex, suggested they start an aquaponics club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was aware that some faculty members had purchased this equipment with the hopes of getting [an aquaponics system] running, but never did,\u201dNesvacil said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bencomo and Clavelo laid the foundation for the club, building the framework to create an on-campus aquaponics system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fall, four sophomores in the Honors College at North Campus made the official launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTwo years ago this was a concept,\u201d said Juan Buitrago, the secretary of the aquaponics club. \u201cNow we have an actual system that\u2019s tangible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During its first year, the club encountered numerous roadblocks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students quickly realized the unused 500-gallon tanks and the industrial pumps were too large.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With guidance from Antwan Daniels, a lab manager at North Campus who has his own aquaponics system at home, and funding from the Earth&#8217;s Ethics Institute, smaller tanks were purchased and installed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the system\u2019s polyvinyl chloride pipes began to leak. However, this summer, students engineered a way to make them function again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the biggest setback occurred last spring when more than half of the 60 tilapia fingerlings died in a lab as they waited for the system to be capable of housing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many fish got caught in a water filter, others were trapped under rocks and some ate each other. Only 20 of them survived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was an eye-opening thing because\u2026a lot of the tilapia didn\u2019t make it; they became food for other tilapia and it was a competition tournament,\u201d Nesvacil said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the temperature was too high for the system to function properly this past summer, the team decided to wait for the fall semester when the air is cooler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the aquaponics system is in full swing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven tilapia are stored in a 150-gallon, styrofoam-covered tank with a pump that guides the water with fish excrement through filtration stages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage one involves a Home Depot bucket filled with sponges that trap the big sediments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second stage entails a bucket full of constantly moving bio balls that attract bacteria to the surface and away from the water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the filtration process has finished, the nitrogen-rich water is pumped up to soilless clay-pebble plant beds, which filter the water one last time as seedlings extract the nutritional benefit of the nitrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35966\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35966\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-35966\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Plants1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35966\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Let It Grow: Seedlings of cucumber, tomato and pepper receive filtered, nutrient-rich water from the aquaponics fish tank as they mature in soilless clay-pebble plant beds. PHOTO COURTESY OF ASHLEY FERRERA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial lights on a 4&#215;10 overhead rack mimic sunlight, allowing the plants to constantly photosynthesize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filtered water is ultimately pumped back into the fish tank. An air pump in the system helps oxygenate the water for the fish via slender plastic tubes, and another tube over the tank spouts water to break the surface tension and generate oxygen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the entire system repeats itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the system operates on its own, constant maintenance is crucial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tilapia are fed fish pellets three to four times a week, though Daniels suggests their diet be changed to duckweed to avoid bloating. Additionally, the tank\u2019s pH and water levels are checked almost daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can\u2019t maintain a system without the people,\u201d said Sofia Mangel, the club\u2019s vice president. \u201cSo it\u2019s very important that people get educated and we get student engagement.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 17, the club reached another milestone\u2013seeds that germinated small roots on tissue paper were transplanted into the aquaponics system and are maturing. The plant beds currently have cucumber, pepper and tomato.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aquaponics club hopes to expand its facility and supply the food pantry with the vegetables they produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They currently have 29 members.
