{"id":36024,"date":"2023-12-06T15:51:47","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T20:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=36024"},"modified":"2023-12-06T15:52:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T20:52:47","slug":"north-campus-reopens-renovated-math-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/north-campus-reopens-renovated-math-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"North Campus Reopens Renovated Math Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After closing for six months, the North Campus math lab has reopened after undergoing a\u00a0 $85,000 facelift.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 3,885 sq. ft. facility, which officially reopened on Nov. 28, features bright, contemporary furniture, curved dry-erase whiteboards, colorful walls and a lab with 25 computers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to continue helping students understand mathematics and ace their exams through one-on-one tutoring and mentorship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are hoping that [students] can find a place that is very inviting and welcoming for them to get the assistance they need with their learning in math,\u2019\u2019 said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irma Cruz-White, the chairperson of the math department at North Campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The space previously featured carpet flooring, cream-colored walls and a row of more than two dozen computers that sat in front of a glass panel window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the computers were situated in front of the window, the monitors were visible to anyone who walked into the math lab, White said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The space also featured a vacant backroom, where the chess club occasionally met, and round tables, which created an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awkward seating arrangement for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students and tutors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI [felt] weird sitting in the middle because it made it seem like I was the authority figure and I didn&#8217;t really like that feeling,\u201d said Francesca Delgado, a math tutor and instructor at the math lab. \u201cI wanted it to feel like we were all equal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the lab has a splash of color, thanks to two murals that feature a yellow, green, orange, blue, red, and purple geometric triangle pattern. One wall reads, \u201cBE THE SOLUTION,\u201d in bold, capitalized letters, and the other wall reads, \u201cMATH LAB\u201d with the same font.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The space also has gray laminate flooring, blue structural columns, four-seat rectangular tables with red and green chairs and blue two-seat booths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The booths and the columns are the only areas in the main lounge with charging stations, a feature some students say needs improvement. However, the backspace of the math lab features 25 computers with charging outlets <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and portable chargers are available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeeing this place renovated really, really works,\u201d said Sean Matias, a math lab tutor. \u201cIt feels more personal, you can kind of engage with [the tutees] more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professors can reserve the computer room for activities or testing by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaking to Carl A Louis, the math lab manager, or Angel Hernandez, the director of Learning Resources at North Campus or by emailing Learning Resources at <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"mailto:northlibrary@mdc.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">northlibrary@mdc.edu<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most significant thing is having a space where students can feel that they&#8217;re welcome,\u201d said North Campus President Fermin Vazquez. \u201cThat provides them an opportunity to share whatever challenges or inquiries they may have about math.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lab hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
