Libraries are often portrayed as dusty and antiqued, but are actually the unsung heroes of the community. They provide free resources just waiting to be utilized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Books<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously libraries offer books, but people underestimate the sheer volume of books they offer. There\u2019s the assumption that they do not have current reads, but the Miami-Dade Public Library System stays up-to-date and has a <\/span>New York Times<\/span><\/i> Bestseller section on their website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cataloging has also become easier because of the internet. By using the <\/span>Miami-Dade Public Library<\/span> <\/span><\/a>\u00a0app, you can search if the book you want is available. You can also request for a book to be brought to your branch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apps<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

More of a listener than reader? Libraries partner with the free library app <\/span>Libby<\/span><\/a><\/span>. It allows library card owners access to hundreds of ebooks and audiobooks and is compatible with Apple and Android devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoopla Digital <\/span><\/a><\/span>is another library partner that offers <\/span>audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines or music. The collection on Hoopla is vast and includes recent releases. It can be streamed on almost any device including televisions and kindles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music can also be streamed on the app <\/span>Freega<\/span>l<\/span><\/a>, which has about <\/span>16 million songs and music videos. It has no software to download, no digital rights management restrictions and is available on Apple and Android devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

News<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In this world of never-ending subscriptions, libraries make news more accessible. Library card owners can access subscriptions to <\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>. They also can retrieve<\/span> Miami Herald<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>El Nuevo Herald<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> archives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For casual reads there is<\/span> Consumer Reporters <\/span><\/i><\/a>. The publication provides advice and reviews on products. It\u2019s ad-free and run by members, allowing readers to get unbiased information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tutoring<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The main purpose of libraries is to make knowledge accessible to the community. There is <\/span>Project L.E.A.D<\/span><\/a><\/span> (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade), which provides free one-on-one sessions with volunteer tutors to adults hoping to improve their English literacy skills. There is also <\/span>Talk Read Sing<\/span>, <\/span><\/a>which focuses on early childhood literacy. For students there is the<\/span> Homework Help & Tutoring Program<\/span><\/a><\/span>. It provides free K-12 online and in-person tutoring in reading, math and science.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assistance<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Since the library is a public service, it\u2019s equipped to help with social services. You can apply for a <\/span>U.S. Passport<\/span><\/a><\/span> and at select branches connect with <\/span>social services<\/span><\/a><\/span> for mental health, housing, food and other government assistance programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also the <\/span>Assistive Services and Technologies <\/span><\/a><\/span>to aid disabled members of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Culture<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, reading is a big part of the library experience, but libraries are not just for reading. A library card allows you to get free passes to select <\/span>museums <\/span><\/a><\/span>throughout Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Main Branch Library located at 101 West Flagler Street has a free <\/span>Permanent Art Collection<\/span><\/a><\/span> that contains more than 7,000 works that focus on African American, Latino and Miami artists.<\/span> The collection features works on paper, photographs, paintings, artists’ books, multiples and small sculptures, and strives to serve as a reflection of our community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every week each branch <\/span>has events<\/span><\/a><\/span> that educate and connect the community. That includes talks with local authors and arts and crafts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
