{"id":36252,"date":"2024-01-25T11:42:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T16:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=36252"},"modified":"2024-01-25T20:03:02","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T01:03:02","slug":"north-campus-students-launch-environmentally-focused-podcast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/north-campus-students-launch-environmentally-focused-podcast\/","title":{"rendered":"North Campus Students Launch Environmentally-Focused Podcast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of environmentally conscious students at North Campus launched a podcast<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mdc.edu\/c.php?g=1307050&amp;p=10065908\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earthly Matters<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last August to delve into the implications climate change has on the planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features six episodes; shows range from 10 to 23 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The podcast was the capstone project for professor Yvette Lujan\u2019s SPC 2608 public speaking course. It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to help students polish their communication skills and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquire experience they can include on their resume. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents became more knowledgeable about what happens in their backyard,\u201d Lujan said about their participation in the podcast.\u00a0 \u201cThey all got a sense of, you know, \u2018We either change or our fields will be altered forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start the initiative, the 24 students in the class split into groups of four to five members. Each cohort selected an environmental topic to research and they developed scripts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episodes took an average of five to six hours to record and edit. But the journey toward the finished product had hurdles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the Kendall Campus, which has a dedicated<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/speech-and-debate-lab-at-kendall-campus-gets-overhaul\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Speech and Debate lab<\/span> <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that features three podcast rooms with equipment such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00d8DE PodMics, television screens, web cameras, computers and panel-padded walls to reduce outside noise, North does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So Lujan enlisted the help of the Learning Resources team at North. They converted a study room on the first floor of the library into a podcast room within two weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features multiple 12-by-12 foam sound panels, four Audio Technica microphones, an EVO 8 sound mixer and a computer with access to Podcastle, a podcasting software that allows users to record and edit conversations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the room\u2019s small quarters\u2014it&#8217;s approximately 9-by-6 feet\u2014proved a tight fit for the group\u2019s four to five cast members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, they had to use tape to keep the noise-canceling foam panels from falling off the walls. The makeshift sound-proof space made it difficult for students to record because microphones picked up echoes coming from inside and outside the cramped room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite the limited resources, the team persevered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it went very, very well, especially for the little setup that we had,\u201d said Edwin Gilmore, a librarian who was instrumental in creating the space the students used. \u201cWe just went for it, not knowing if this was going to work, and we made it work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episodes focused on topics such as global warming, rising sea levels, forest fires and floods and how that affects overall health and human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think I developed many skills when it comes to speaking out loud and supporting my opinions,\u201d\u00a0 said 22-year-old Claudio Rosales, who\u00a0 participated in the<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=47&amp;v=ybkp1e4TGZY&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryguides.mdc.edu%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDM2ODQyLDEzOTExNywyMzg1MQ&amp;feature=emb_title\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fires Unveiled<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">episode that explored the consequences of forest fires on humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashley Ferrera, a 20-year-old student in the Honors College at North Campus, created the name and logo for the podcast\u2014a hexagon encompassing a miniature earth with a plant shooting out and lightning signs on top.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUltimately, this project is important because it gives students an opportunity to voice the facts of our current environmental state in ways that other students [can] digest,\u201d Ferrera said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lujan hopes to continue the podcast next fall by creating a learning community environment that allows students from North Campus\u2019 introduction to environmental science (EVR 1001) course to apply what they learned as they move on to her public speaking class.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"> here<\/a><\/span> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
