The energy was electric as members of the Hialeah Campus Student Government Association shuffled into Room 2101-04 on Feb. 5 for their biweekly senate board meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Nayely, the secretary of SGA.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Janourys, the treasure of SGA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m Jonathan, your vice president,\u201d announced Hialeah Campus President Georgette Perez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The proclamation was met with a chorus of laughter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Perez wasn\u2019t auditioning to star in the reality television talent competition <\/span>Last Comic Standing<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>; she was swapping places with 21-year-old Jonathan Lalla for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The assignment was part of Shark Switch, an initiative launched this spring by <\/span>Jordan Chang<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the director of student life at Hialeah Campus, that aims to enhance leadership skills and strengthen the connection between students and administrators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chang hopes Shark Switch will become an annual program that can expand to include switches with other administrators.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe further you go up among the administrative side, the more removed you are from the actual student,\u201d said Chang, who has worked in higher education for eleven years. \u201cI looked at [Shark Switch] as an opportunity for the campus president to come in refreshed and see what’s going on in classrooms, in club meetings, but also to network with the students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During a five-hour period, Perez took on Lalla’s role as a computer science student who wears multiple hats, including Phi Theta Kappa president, SGA vice president<\/span>, senior scholar in the <\/span>Hialeah Scholars<\/span><\/a> program and a student assistant in the IT department.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Lalla, an international student from Trindad and Tobago, tackled Perez\u2019s responsibilities as campus president.<\/span><\/p>\n

Duties began at 9 a.m. sharp.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decked-out in a navy-blue suit, paisley tie, brown dress shoes, pink \u2018I love MDC Hialeah\u2019 socks and a beaming smile, Lalla<\/span>\u2014<\/span>who considers himself \u201ca little bit more serious\u201d and \u201cnot as smiley\u201d as Perez<\/span>\u2014<\/span>eagerly greeted staff and students around campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur president, she\u2019s very compassionate, understanding and happy all the time,\u201d Lalla said. \u201cI\u2019m looking to see if I [can] fill her shoes, but also incorporate my leadership style, which may not be as jolly all the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cexcitedly-nervous\u201d Perez sported a blue \u2018I love MDC Hialeah\u2019 T-shirt, cuffed jeans, black sandals and a gray Baggallini backpack. She sat in the front row during a chemistry lecture for the first time in more than 30 years, diligently taking notes using a pen and a spiral notebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was worried about grasping the material, but her main concern was taking someone\u2019s seat.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, people get territorial,\u201d Perez remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back at the president\u2019s office, Lalla prepared for a cabinet meeting and wrote a welcome message for a professional development workshop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He effortlessly switched gears, condensing a one-and-a-half page email and recording a robocall\u2014a call that conveys a pre-recorded voice message\u2014 to notify students about upcoming tuition deadlines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Lalla headed to meetings, Perez clocked in at the IT department, dealing with pending technical support requests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perez\u2019s day was robust, filled with meetings with SGA, Hialeah Scholars and Rodney Castillo, the co-advisor for PTK.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalla pressed onward with his presidential duties when\u2014suddenly\u2014the phone rang.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the phone was Adriana Alvarez, the director of the testing department at Hialeah Campus. She said students in the testing center couldn\u2019t concentrate because there was a ruckus coming from the ping-pong table area in student life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalla couldn\u2019t contain his laughter, but he promptly called Chang to settle the matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minutes later, Nicolet Conesa, the program manager for the continuing education department at Hialeah Campus, walked in to discuss a proposal to hold a summer camp for kids on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always good to invest in our future,\u201d Lalla said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The day concluded with a Chick-fil-A lunch and a debriefing session.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalla said he got a deeper appreciation for the inner workings of campus administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s a lot of work to be done, and you can\u2019t do it by yourself,\u201d Lalla said. \u201cYou need a team and a strong foundation of empathy, understanding [everyone] is under a lot of pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Perez’s experience was humbling. She nearly walked into the wrong class and stepped into a packed elevator during peak hours. The episodes reminded her why intentionally connecting with students is vital.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe as a campus always try to put ourselves into the shoes of our students,\u201d Perez said. \u201cWe may not always successfully do it and that’s why we need student input so much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
