Suzanne \u201cSuzy\u201d Batlle grew up feasting on her grandma\u2019s sundaes after dinner. It became a South Florida ritual in the Cuban household\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, naturally, when she had kids of her own<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Tommy and Bianca<\/span>\u2014she continued the tradition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But when Batlle was wrestling through a divorce, thyroid cancer and being laid off from Bank of America in 2008, eating ice cream became more than just a tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n

It became her <\/span>business<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids kept telling me, ‘Why don’t you open an ice cream shop?\u2019 and I was like, \u2018That’s so dumb. Why would I do that?\u2019\u201d Batlle recalls. \u201cThey just kept on, and I kept thinking about it. Finally, I said, \u2018Well, I don’t know how to make ice cream, but I’ll go to school to learn how to make [it].\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So she attended <\/span>Penn State\u2019s Ice Cream Short Course<\/span><\/a><\/span> in Pennsylvania and <\/span>Scoop School<\/span><\/a><\/span> in St. Louis, Missouri to learn how to make the frozen desert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, her children\u2019s idea is melting the hearts of customers in the soul of Little Havana after she launched Az\u00facar, a homemade Cuban ice cream shop on Calle Ocho, in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four years later, she was part of the first cohort of the <\/span>Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program at MDC<\/span><\/a><\/span>. The 12-week program helps small businesses improve their networking and entrepreneurship skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I went to college, there wasn\u2019t even social media, so stuff that didn\u2019t even exist before has come into play in business,\u201d Batlle said. \u201c[The] school taught [me] everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now she can virtually pitch her signature flavors like Freshman 15, which has vanilla ice cream, marshmallow fluff, peanut butter and oreos. It was named by the shop\u2019s Instagram <\/span>(@azucaricecream<\/span><\/a>)<\/span> followers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Az\u00facar is located at 1503 S.W. 8th St. It offers more than 50 flavors and sells ice cream pints, cakes and T-shirts with Cuban sayings such as \u201cYa tu sabes!\u201d (you already know) and does catering.<\/span><\/p>\n

As customers enter the store, they are greeted by a 3-D ice cream cone sculpture topped with five scoops of ice cream and a neon sign that reads, \u201cAzucar ice<\/span><\/p>\n

cream company.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuban-themed store, which cost $280,000 to build, features seats upholstered with guayaberas and plastic, a painting of Celia Cruz, light fixtures with hanging ice cream cones and a chalk wall with the names of flavors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve always been a lover of art,\u201d Batlle said. \u201cI started buying art from everybody in [Little Havana] and I feel that’s helpful for many reasons. It helps the people in the neighborhood and keeps the culture [alive].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Az\u00facar\u2019s signature flavors include their trademarked \u201cAbuela Maria\u201d\u2014vanilla ice cream mixed with guava, cream cheese and Maria cookies\u2014and \u201cCafe con Leche,\u201d a Cuban coffee-flavored ice cream with Oreo chunks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Denise Galvez Turros, a weekly customer for more than a decade, says, \u201cEver since I tried the Cafe con Leche flavor, it literally became my [and my kids\u2019] favorite ice cream. We often will go just to buy pints of it to stock up the fridge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Patricia De la Rosa, Batlle\u2019s childhood best friend and Az\u00facar\u2019s chief of operations since 2013, recalls the moment when the shop\u2019s name and slogan were created.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were going back and forth and [Batlle] said, \u2018How about something with Celia Cruz?\u2019 My brain just said, \u2018No, no, just name it Az\u00facar,\u2019\u201d De la Rosa recalls. \u201cThen my daughter walked in and she goes, \u2018We like it sweet.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Az\u00facar opened in July of 2011 on <\/span>Cultural Friday<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a free event that celebrates the history and culture of Little Havana on the third Friday of every month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn that day, I called my friends and family because I didn\u2019t have workers,\u201d Batlle said. \u201cEverybody came to help me and all of [a] sudden [it was] awesome. I was running out of ice cream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They sold out. Batlle woke up at 3 a.m. the following day to make more ice cream. Since then, she has hired three ice cream makers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Az\u00facar has gained popularity throughout the years and been showcased on television networks and magazines like <\/span>Food Network<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Univision<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>People<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Batlle has continued to expand the Az\u00facar brand. In 2018, she opened a 1,200 sq. ft. shop in Dallas after her mom moved to the city. It closed last July because of a lease dispute with the landlord and a gelato maker.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last February, Batlle opened another location in Pinecrest, 11429 S Dixie Hwy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Az\u00facar products are now found at\u00a0 hotels such as the Loews in <\/span>Miami Beach<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Coral Gables<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the Ritz-Carlton in <\/span>Key Biscayne<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Coral Gables<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and the <\/span>Confidante Miami Beach<\/span><\/a><\/span> by Hyatt.<\/span><\/p>\n

They will also be featured at upcoming community events like the <\/span>South Beach Wine & Food Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> from Feb. 22-25 and <\/span>Miami Vice<\/span><\/i>\u2019s 40th anniversary reunion in September.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou just gotta keep throwing the ball forward,\u201d Batlle said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I look forward to every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
