Alejandro Ri\u00f3s knows the power movies have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a film critic in Cuba, he witnessed the threat cinema posed to the government\u2019s communist regime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ri\u00f3s\u00a0recalls the boldness of three young filmmakers\u2014Ricardo Vega, Jorge Crespo and Juansi\u2014who were invited to showcase their work at the University of Miami in the 1980s, but\u00a0 the Cuban government forbade them from attending.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their response?<\/span><\/p>\n

They created <\/span>El Informe<\/span><\/i>, a three-minute satire film questioning why they couldn\u2019t go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by creators like those brash filmmakers, Ri\u00f3s ached to create a platform that highlighted the talent of directors who were unafraid to expose the political realities of the Caribbean island.<\/span><\/p>\n

So in 1993, he created the Cuban Cinema Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For more than a decade, Ri\u00f3s, who <\/span>retired as the College\u2019s Hispanic media specialist in 2018<\/span><\/a><\/span>, presented monthly Cuban films at the Wolfson Auditorium.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the series died after 2007 when Ri\u00f3s started hosting <\/span>La Mirada Indiscreta<\/span><\/i>, a show that analyzes Cuban cinematography on AmericaTeVe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seventeen years later, the program has been resuscitated. In January, the Miami Film Festival announced that <\/span>the Cuban Cinema Series<\/span><\/a><\/span>, led by 71-year-old Ri\u00f3s, was making a comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will be an offshoot of the festival and will be sponsored by ArtesMiami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like the perfect time to announce the Cuban Cinema Series,\u201d said James Woolley, MFF director, in an <\/span>MDC press release<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u201cWith a newly renovated Koubek Theater as part of the Miami Film Festival Family, we have an outstanding venue to showcase beloved classics for the whole community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The CCS rebooted on Jan. 26 with the screening of 1979\u2019s <\/span>El S\u00faper<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Directed by Le\u00f3n Ichaso and Orlando Jim\u00e9nez Leal, the film follows the life of Roberto, a Cuban exile struggling to adjust to his new life as a building superintendent in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It continued on Feb. 29 with the screening of <\/span>8-A<\/span><\/i>, a 1993 documentary that highlights the trial and execution of General Arnaldo Tom\u00e1s Ochoa S\u00e1nchez, the highest-ranking general of the Cuban revolution, also directed by Leal .<\/span><\/p>\n

At the MFF, Ri\u00f3s will lead \u201c<\/span>Spotlight on Cuba<\/span><\/a><\/span>,\u201d a program featuring nine modern Cuban films, such as <\/span>Oceans Are The Real Continents<\/span><\/i>, a black-and-white film by Italian director Tommaso Santambrogio. It shines light on the pain associated with separation using three separate storylines and is set in San Antonio De Los Ba\u00f1os, Cuba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CCS will resume on May 16 with a screening of <\/span>El Caso Padilla<\/span><\/i> (The Padilla Affair), a documentary that showcases the trial of Heberto Padilla, a poet who criticized the Cuban Revolution. This year\u2019s series will conclude in July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s important to keep on the torch of Cuban Cinema,\u201d Ri\u00f3s said. \u201cYou will have to go back to cinema\u2014with good or bad films\u2014to reveal the truth about what has been happening in Cuba for the past 65 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

All movies in the Cuban Cinema Series are shown at the<\/span><\/i> Koubek Center<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, 2705 S.W. Third Street.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
