Atavya Fowler was awestruck as she stared at the white Nike Air Force 1\u2019s with a bedazzled logo that popped up on her Instagram feed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had never seen anybody paint on shoes before,\u201d Fowler recalls. \u201cI was captivated by that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Eager to unleash her creativity, Fowler experimented with a pair of white platform sneakers her sister, Gianna Moncur, gave her to test her skills. The then 17-year-old labored at a table in her living room in the Bahamas for four days before concocting a Johnny Test and Dexter\u2019s Laboratory inspired design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly four years later, Fowler, now a <\/span>softball player at Miami Dade College<\/span><\/a><\/span>, realized those sneakers were the genesis for a shoe design business that has attracted the attention of professional baseball players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 20-year-old computer animation student at Kendall Campus has customized more than 20 shoes, including spikes and sneakers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArt is something that relaxes me,\u201d Fowler said. \u201cI don\u2019t consider it work. It\u2019s basically a hobby that I get paid to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She charges $100 to design a pair of shoes, but prices can increase depending on details such as the types of shoelaces she uses or how intricate the artwork is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fowler’s Major League Baseball clients include relief pitchers <\/span>Joel Payamps<\/span><\/a><\/span> of the Milwaukee Brewers, <\/span>Luis Garcia<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Guillermo Zu\u00f1iga<\/span> <\/span><\/a>of the Los Angeles Angels and <\/span>Iv\u00e1n Herrera<\/span><\/a><\/span>,<\/span> a catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her first MLB order came from Tampa Bay Rays outfielder <\/span>Harold Ramirez<\/span><\/a><\/span>, who discovered her talents on Instagram in the summer of 2022. Impressed, he requested a pair of autism-awareness themed sneakers as a tribute to his son, Elian, who is autistic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, Ramirez has ordered five more customized cleats.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe has excellent talent and her business is incredible,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cI hope she can grow quickly and have a huge business.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Fowler\u2019s cousin Chavez Young, a center fielder in the Milwaukee Brewers minor league system, ordered his first personalized shoes for the Don\u2019t Blink Home Run Derby in the Bahamas more than three years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The swagged-out footwear featured aqua and yellow shoelaces, confetti, black palm trees and a John 3:16 Bible reference.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI give her kudos; she did her homework,\u201d said the 26-year-old Young, who owns approximately 10 customized shoes. \u201cAnybody can design shoes. But it\u2019s [about] the next level\u2014when you play in them, are they gonna fade? Can you use them next year?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When she started her business, Fowler painted every inch of shoe by hand and used a hair dryer to speed up the process. It took about 48 hours to finish a pair of shoes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now she utilizes a master airbrush, a heat gun and a cricut\u2014a machine used to create stencils and vinyls\u2014allowing her to decrease her production time to 16 hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think for her to have a business where she can use her creativity and love for art is brillant,\u201d says Sharks Head Softball Coach<\/span> Gina De Ag\u00fcero, who asked Fowler for an MDC-themed pair of Nikes in December of 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Sharks Head Baseball Coach <\/span>Adrian Morales<\/span><\/a><\/span>,<\/span> who is now at Nova Southeastern University, was so impressed with Fowler\u2019s craftsmanship that he commissioned her to design cleats for his daughters, Penelope and Alejandra, last March.<\/span><\/p>\n

The finished product featured a bald eagle, the girls\u2019 favorite colors (blue, pink and purple), their favorite Bible verse (John 3:16), an American flag with three nailed crosses, a hand holding a soccer ball and the sign language sign for love.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They loved it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a clean pair that we will never use because that\u2019s how much we liked and appreciated her work,\u201d\u00a0 Morales said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The shoes rest on a mantel in the girls\u2019 room next to a cross.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fowler, who is also a Christian, says her faith has helped her persevere when she\u2019s worried about finishing designs on time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t even worry about it anymore,\u201d Fowler said. \u201cAnything I put my hands to, I know that His hands are all over it. The battle\u2019s already won.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
