{"id":36731,"date":"2024-03-21T20:00:53","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T00:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=36731"},"modified":"2024-05-06T08:26:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T12:26:55","slug":"student-fighting-sickle-cell-had-one-wish-she-opted-for-a-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/student-fighting-sickle-cell-had-one-wish-she-opted-for-a-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Fighting Sickle Cell Had One Wish, She Opted For A Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Fernandye Eugene, perpetual pain is an everyday reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 21-year-old frequently experiences blood clots on her arms, legs and feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes she struggles with simple functions like breathing and walking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pain is too intense, she blacks out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene has sickle cell disease, a rare genetic blood disorder that causes a person\u2019s red blood cells, which carry oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body, to be shaped like a \u201cc\u201d rather than an \u201co.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When that happens, her red blood cells clump and die, resulting in anemia and restricted blood flow. The pain hinders many areas of her life, including her ability to go to school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 2021, sickle cell disease prevented her from attending college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that changed this spring when she was granted a <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mdc.edu\/press_release\/miami-dade-college-student-receives-college-tuition-assistance-from-make-a-wish-southern-florida\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$10,000 scholarship<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wish.org\/sfla\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Make-A-Wish Foundation\u2019s South Florida chapter<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a non-profit organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of children with chronic illness\u2014to pursue an associate&#8217;s degree in business at North Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many kids ask to attend a concert, travel or meet a celebrity as their wish, Eugene opted for an education. However, her wish was delayed nearly four years because of COVID-19 and her condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe chose this wish because she knew the importance of education,\u201d said Shelby Ruebens, who volunteers at MAW and helped bring Eugene\u2019s educational aspirations to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>College Life<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At MDC, Eugene is taking English, American federal government, intermediate algebra and computer applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But her sickle cell symptoms often get in the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When her pain is too much, she stays home. When it reaches intolerable degrees, she checks into Jackson Memorial Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene\u2019s sister, Karina, often accompanies her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Karina doesn\u2019t stay with Eugene for the entirety of her hospitalizations\u2014which can last between four days to three weeks\u2014Karina supports her throughout the process of being admitted into the hospital, assigned a room and given medication. That can take as much as two days in extreme cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe likes me to be her emotional support,\u201d said Karina, who keeps a bag prepared with medication, clothes and snacks for her sister\u2019s medical stays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene\u2019s hospitalizations often cause her to miss class. Her most recent visit was in February and lasted 10 days. It was due to pain and COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenniffer Niles, Eugene\u2019s English professor at North Campus, was overjoyed to see her return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe idea of anyone being in the hospital for any period of time gets to me, and she\u2019s young; I know she\u2019s living with this disease for the rest of her life,\u201d said Niles, who works with Eugene to catch up on assignments she misses due to her absences. \u201cI was just happy to see that she was able to come back to doing something she wanted to do, even if it&#8217;s just for a moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Growing Pains<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene was born in \u00a0Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Mercedes and Brunel in March of 2003.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her family immigrated to Miami when she was six years old. They settled in North Miami Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she was about 10, Eugene\u2019s left arm swelled up. When her parents took her to the hospital, they thought her arm was broken, so she was fitted for a cast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, the swelling went down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year later, the issue returned. During a trip to visit family in New York, Eugene developed a swollen left ankle that progressively worsened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was given Tylenol, but the swelling didn\u2019t subside. Eventually, her ankle ballooned to \u201cthe size of a baseball.\u201d She started limping and crying and was unable to walk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week later, she was rushed to New York University Winthrop Hospital where she was diagnosed with sickle cell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, Eugene\u2019s symptoms caused her to go to the hospital three to four times a year, but as she has gotten older, she now averages five to six hospitalizations annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since there is no cure for the chronic condition, Eugene is only treated for her symptoms. At the hospital, she is administered intravenous fluids, pain medications such as morphine and fentanyl, and blood transfusions when her red blood cell count is low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene\u2019s hemoglobin levels are usually between nine and 10 grams per deciliter. The average hemoglobin levels for females is between 12 and 16 grams per deciliter, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK259\/#:~:text=To%20ensure%20adequate%20tissue%20oxygenation,low%2C%20the%20patient%20has%20anemia.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the National Institute of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lowest her hemoglobin has ever been is at 4.2 grams per deciliter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Doctors] told me they\u2019re surprised that I [was] still able to walk,\u201d Eugene said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About three years ago, Eugene began experiencing fainting spells. Six months ago, she discovered her hips were decaying due to a lack of blood flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her body is affected by changes in temperature, lack of sleep, poor diet, low water consumption and even her emotions. The smallest things<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an abrupt tap on the shoulder, play fighting or riding roller coasters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can trigger pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love doing crazy things. I was somebody who threw caution to the wind when I was younger,\u201d the roller-coaster fanatic said. \u201cBut now I got to be cautious of staying safe because I will suffer if I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Fighting On<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene acknowledges she is struggling in her classes because of the pockets of time she has missed due to her illness, but she is staying positive\u2014seeking tutors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething my mom definitely wanted me to do\u2014like, drilled into my head\u2014was to go to college, not [just] because the school would be good for me. She didn&#8217;t want me to be at home doing nothing,\u201d she said. \u201cIf nobody is at home with me, and I faint or something happens to me, there would be nobody to call.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The young scholar\u00a0 is undecided on whether to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree, but the one thing she is certain of is that she wants to be her \u201cown boss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI commend her,\u201d Niles said. \u201cIt can\u2019t be easy, you know, and the complications that she has to deal with, not just the disease itself.\u00a0 When you get sick with one thing, [it] can evolve into something else, and then still try to juggle being a student, keep up with your studies and put on a brave face sitting in class [when] you might not be feeling well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she has a long road ahead, Eugene leans on the support of her family and God to get through the daily rigors she battles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNine times out of 10, for a sickle cell person, you will always have pain,\u201d Eugene said. \u201cYou have to decide for yourself whether it\u2019s enough pain to go to the hospital and miss whatever it is that you&#8217;re doing right now, or if whatever you&#8217;re doing right now is more important.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"> here<\/a><\/span> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
