{"id":36779,"date":"2024-04-03T07:29:35","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T11:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/\/?p=36779"},"modified":"2024-04-03T07:29:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T11:29:35","slug":"more-than-words-how-language-influences-our-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/more-than-words-how-language-influences-our-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than Words: How Language Influences Our Decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People frequently ponder what life would be like if they could not see or hear, but they don&#8217;t often consider how devastating life would be without language, the number one way of connecting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language shapes and impacts our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-biolinguistic-turn\/201702\/how-the-language-we-speak-affects-the-way-we-think\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">houghts and perceptions<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, in turn, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-language-shapes-thought\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shape our worldviews<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not everyone speaks the same tongue. Language and dialects vary throughout nations and can reflect differences in cultures, attitudes and social norms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the role language plays in human interaction can help us grasp where cultural differences stem from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some languages have a strong focus on gender. French and Spanish commonly assign feminine or masculine endings to nouns and object pronouns, such as \u201cla mesa\u201d (the table, feminine noun and pronoun) or \u201cun livre\u201d (a book, masculine noun and pronoun).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can also be seen in the Hindi language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an article for the BBC titled <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20201006-are-some-languages-more-sexist-than-others\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Subtle Ways Language Shapes Us<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nayantura Dutta explains how a person\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/mind\/from-mouth-to-mind-how-language-governs-our-perceptions-of-gender\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender influences the speech used<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile learning Hindi, a gendered language, I realized that I was expected to show respect to men, sometimes more than women. I wasn\u2019t allowed to speak to my male and female classmates in the same way,\u201d Dutta said. \u201cWith men, I was taught to use the honorific plural (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aap kya kar rahe hain?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tu kya kar raha hai?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ask \u2018What are you doing?\u2019), but could only show respect to women using feminine endings (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aap kya kar rahin hain?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tu kya kar rahi hai?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, women must use the right honorific when speaking to men because men are seen as superior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This attitude of holding men to a higher standard is also reflected in how Indian women have struggled to reduce domestic violence and achieve gender equality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up in a culture with a language that emphasizes gender in everything could assign stereotypes to what it means to be feminine or masculine and influence an entire culture&#8217;s attitude toward men and women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language, specifically sentence structure and grammar, also affects our perception of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who speak English typically view time horizontally, moving left to right, while individuals who speak Mandarin view time vertically, with the past being up and the future moving down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, some languages don\u2019t conjugate their words in terms of past, present or future, which <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20221103-how-language-warps-the-way-you-perceive-time-and-space\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influences people\u2019s daily decisions<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral economist Keith Chen <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anderson.ucla.edu\/faculty\/keith.chen\/papers\/LanguageWorkingPaper.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studied<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the relationship between language and economic behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He found that people who spoke languages that lack strong grammatical distinctions between the future and the present, such as German, Mandarin, Japanese, Dutch and Scandinavian, viewed the future as the present and were more likely to be proactive.
