{"id":36783,"date":"2024-04-03T07:41:05","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T11:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/\/?p=36783"},"modified":"2024-04-19T14:45:59","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T18:45:59","slug":"the-female-gaze-doesnt-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-female-gaze-doesnt-exist\/","title":{"rendered":"The Female Gaze Doesn\u2019t Exist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">By Katarina Azpiri and Nicole Del Rio<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone by now has heard of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/second-read\/the-invention-of-the-male-gaze\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male gaze.<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coined by Laura Mulvey, a British feminist filmmaker, the term reflects how corporate and societal needs are shaped to fit men\u2019s desires. In recent years, there has been a wave of people claiming to dress for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/08\/how-do-we-define-the-female-gaze-in-2018.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">emale gaze,<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as if that were the opposite of the male gaze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the female gaze doesn\u2019t exist. Replacing the word \u201cmale\u201d for \u201cfemale\u201d doesn\u2019t change the problematic issues behind it, namely, the idea that we must dress for others and that women are inherently objects to be observed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty standards and the way we view attraction has been skewed, not necessarily by men\u2019s sexual desires, but by corporate greed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give an example, think of Megan Fox in<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f6L3Ef1JCC8\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transformers<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and how her character fixed cars in sexy poses as male gaze versus her character in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/C8azftM5puI?si=ATgUwcjqq3MtUzoa\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using her attractiveness to exert her revenge on men as female gaze. Those scenes are meant to appeal to different audiences but by reducing the characters to their sex appeal\u2014is the female gaze as revolutionary as it claims?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty standards have historically been tied to capitalism. Everyone wants to be beautiful and everyone is willing to spend money to achieve whatever is marketed to them as cool. Aging is a natural part of life and yet the beauty industry has made <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2022\/7\/28\/23219258\/anti-aging-cream-expensive-scam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$4.9 billion<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States alone from anti-aging products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of the male gaze\u2019s cultural impact is shaving. The flapper girl aesthetic was originally supposed to be about female liberation, but it was weaponized to create new insecurities.\u00a0 When razor companies wanted to expand their reach and started marketing to women, the knee length dresses were the perfect time to strike. Ads started to market female leg hair as <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/5\/22\/8640457\/leg-shaving-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unattractive<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just to get women to buy razors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The female gaze was meant to counteract the male gaze but ultimately it just set a new standard. It\u2019s still telling people to buy products to appeal to a standard set by predominately male CEOs instead of developing their own style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole concept of beauty and attraction has been skewed for corporate profit, so just because a woman is dressed in what the media has taught us to find unattractive, does not constitute a female gaze. It\u2019s just a new set of standards set by the media. The female gaze does not exist because women did not set the standard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identity and attraction is deeply personal and unique. The fluidity of attraction goes beyond gender as we\u2019ve seen people change what bodies and personalities can be attractive in the name of whatever we are told is trendy at the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term female gaze is not the savior of the male gaze because it still encourages objectification.
