{"id":36814,"date":"2024-04-04T15:48:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T19:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=36814"},"modified":"2024-04-19T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T17:39:01","slug":"the-architect-of-the-baseball-program-at-kendall-campus-passes-away-at-94","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/the-architect-of-the-baseball-program-at-kendall-campus-passes-away-at-94\/","title":{"rendered":"Architect Of Baseball Program At Kendall Campus Dies At 94"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baseball holds a special place in the hearts of South Floridians; it&#8217;s a symbol of national pride and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Kendall Campus, the baseball diamond was Charlie Greene\u2019s pulpit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014it\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where he taught life&#8217;s lessons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legendary coach, who pioneered the campus\u2019 baseball program in 1968 and oversaw it for three decades, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/miami-fl\/charles-greene-11712871\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed away<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on March 13. He was 94.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Early Years<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oldest of six siblings, Greene was born in Irvington, New Jersey in 1929, the year the Great Depression started, to Rose Rainko and Patrick Joseph Greene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He spent his early childhood traveling between Poland, his mother\u2019s homeland, and Ireland, his father\u2019s native land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene eventually returned to the United States and discovered he had a knack for pitching at Dover Senior High School in New Hampshire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After high school, he pitched for one season in the now defunct New York Giants minor league system, but his career was derailed after he sustained a career-ending injury to his right arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1951, Greene was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He served in the Corps of Engineers, building bridges and digging fox holes. Two years later, he was relieved of active duty to tend to his ailing mother, who had cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he returned home, Greene attended the University of New Hampshire, where he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after, he landed a job at Portsmouth High School in New Hampshire, coaching baseball and basketball for six years, eventually earning a master\u2019s degree from Boston University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1964, Greene pursued a doctorate degree in education from the University of Alabama, simultaneously serving as a graduate assistant football coach under the legendary Paul\u00a0 \u201cBear\u201d Bryant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three years later he left with his degree and his life partner, Patricia, his wife of 57 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Building A Program<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1968, the then 39-year-old was hired to spearhead the baseball program at Kendall Campus, then known as Miami-Dade South. He saw the program evolve, from the planting of the outfield trees to the addition of a scoreboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe watched every blade of grass grow,\u201d Patricia said. \u201cHe watered that field and he loved it, more than his own lawn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Greene\u2019s tenure, the Dade-South Jaguars earned state championships in 1970, 1978 and 1981.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also reached the Junior College Athletic Association World Series twice (1978 and 1981), winning it all in 1981. During his storied career, Greene earned National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors and he was inducted into the Junior College World Series Hall of Fame in 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene was selected into two other Halls of Fame: the American Baseball Coaches Association (1994) and the Florida College System Activities Association (1995).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Cross-Town Rivalry<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene\u2019s biggest battles happened when he faced cross-town rival Demini Mainieri, who started the baseball program at North Campus in 1960.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36813\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-36813\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-design-11.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pals: Pictured from left to right are Charlie Greene and his long-time friend and rival Demie Mainieri, who pioneered the baseball program at North Campus. PHOTO COURTESY OF WOLFSON CAMPUS ARCHIVES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainieri, who retired with 1,012 wins, and Greene, who finished with 935 victories, were neck-and-neck for more than two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharks catching coach <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/he-won-a-world-series-with-the-new-york-yankees-now-hes-an-assistant-coach-at-mdc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rudy Arias<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who played for the Dade-South Jaguars from 1975-77, recalls being caught in the middle of the feud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a sophomore, the catcher was hit in the back with a pitch during a game at Dade-North. Greene stepped in to prevent tensions from escalating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite Greene\u2019s attempts to keep the peace, \u201call hell broke loose.\u201d Greene never let Arias live the scuffle down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018Rudy, you started the biggest brawl,\u2019\u201d Arias recalls Greene saying. \u201c\u2018Every time he saw me, he would tell the story to everybody.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the competition was fierce, Greene and Mainieri were forever intertwined\u2014ironically, Greene died eleven years to the day of <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/mdc-baseball-legend-demie-mainieri-passes-away-at-90\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainieri\u2019s<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was like the younger brother with the bigger brother\u2026they had a few friendly disputes, but we were friends,\u201d Patricia said. \u201cOn the field, you were very competitive, and then off the field, we went to their house for dinner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Devoted Father<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Greene had an ardent commitment to coaching, he alway had time for his sons, Charlie Jr., Michael and Chris. He religiously attended their baseball and basketball games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe would come right from his games to our games in full uniform, a lot of times. He wouldn&#8217;t even wait to get home to shower,\u201d recalls Charlie Jr., who was a catcher for the Jaguars from 1989-91. \u201cWe always knew where dad was\u2014in full uniform in the stands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Charlie Jr.&#8217;s fondest memories with his dad happened during his freshman season. The elder Greene pretended to faint after the youngster hit a home run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone thought that was funny, I didn&#8217;t think it was funny,\u201d said Charlie Jr., a former major-league player who now serves as Milwaukee Brewers\u2019 bullpen coach. \u201cHe didn\u2019t think I could hit a ball that far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene also served as a father-figure to his players, dedicated to improving their athletic skill and molding their character.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was big on\u2026 cutting your hair nice so you looked like an athlete, wearing the uniform nicely, tucking in your shirt, wearing your hat right, shining your shoes,\u201d recalls Red Berry, Greene\u2019s best friend who served as a coach at Miami Coral Park Senior High School and at the University of Miami. \u201cAnd, of course, being on time. If you were a minute late you went home. It didn&#8217;t matter who you were.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you were Alex Fernandez, who went 15-1 for Greene in 1990 and was selected in the first-round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The talented right-hander, who struggled with being punctual, tested Greene\u2019s patience. One time after Fernandez arrived 10 minutes late to practice, Green was waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was a big part of the team,\u201d Fernandez recalls. \u201cHe and all the guys [were] sitting in the dugout. I showed up running and he rolled his watch back to make sure that I wasn&#8217;t late. He goes to me, \u2018You just made it kiddo, you just made it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hard-nosed coach, who was a stickler for the rules but \u201cnever held a grudge,\u201d was also known for holding intense practices. His players were known as \u201cGreene\u2019s Marines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arias recalls fall practices starting at 5 a.m. with laps around the Dade-South track, followed by weight lifting and class.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe would sit up in the stands and just look at us and we wouldn\u2019t dare stop,\u201d Arias chuckled. \u201cYou stop, you were gonna stay there running \u2018til whatever time he wanted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the tough love, Greene\u2019s players knew he had their best intentions in mind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe wanted it done the right way. And he always said this: \u2018You&#8217;re only as good as what you do when you know no one will ever find out what you did,\u2019\u201d recalls Gil Paterson, who pitched for the Jaguars from 1974-75. \u201cYou know, it&#8217;s kind of like, [someone] says to you, \u2018Go run five sprints,\u2019 but then they leave, and then you only run three. Yeah, well, that&#8217;s not what he wanted to build in us. What he built in us was that if no one was watching, we would still do the right thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this day, Paterson, a pitching coordinator for the Oakland Athletics, carries Greene\u2019s lessons with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery time I do some of his drills, I think of him. Every time. And I do them every day, for as long as I\u2019m alive,\u201d Paterson said. \u201cI love him and I&#8217;m gonna remember him. There\u2019s probably not a day that I don&#8217;t think of him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Lifelong Passion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were no days off for Greene when it came to baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He spent summers coaching in the Cape Cod League\u2014a collegiate summer baseball league\u2014teaching minor league players in the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs system, and helping with the United States national baseball team (Team USA), where he served as head coach from 1988-89.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene taught baseball clinics in Germany, Poland, France, Taiwan and Aruba and published several books.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was the editor of <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glove-Baseball-American-Coaches-Association\/dp\/0736062637\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Glove Baseball<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was featured in the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Baseball-Coaching-Bible-Jerry-Kindall\/dp\/0736001611\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Baseball Coaching Bible<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and co-authored <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/-\/es\/Charlie-Greene\/dp\/B000TD1JYY\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build A Winning Pitcher-Catcher Combination<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also wrote monthly articles for Collegiate Baseball, a newspaper that recently shut down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe loved baseball,\u201d Charlie Jr. said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having a pacemaker and undergoing two hip replacements, Greene stayed active until his final days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was a member of the Miami Baseball Forum. The group, which has approximately 40-50 members, meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Duffy\u2019s Sports Grill to discuss baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe would sit next to each other at the Miami Baseball Forum and we would always be at each other&#8217;s throats. If somebody came to a forum and heard us go at it, they would think we hated each other, but it was really love. We really loved each other,\u201d Berry said. \u201cWe\u2019ll always keep his chair empty in his honor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greene is survived by his wife Patricia, 81, his three sons, four grandchildren\u2014Patrick, Gavin, Shannon and Garrett (a quarterback at West Virginia University)\u2014and the hundreds of lives he touched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s always told his kids and his grandkids [to] follow their passion,\u201d Charlie Jr. said. \u201cHe knew he was never going to become rich being a coach, but he was rich in relationships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"> here<\/a><\/span> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
