{"id":36860,"date":"2024-04-10T11:34:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T15:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/\/?p=36860"},"modified":"2024-04-10T12:38:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:38:24","slug":"contrary-to-what-employers-believe-gen-z-is-not-lazy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/contrary-to-what-employers-believe-gen-z-is-not-lazy\/","title":{"rendered":"Contrary To What Employers Believe, Gen Z Is Not Lazy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Z is entering the workforce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/05\/gen-z-don-t-want-to-work-for-you-here-s-how-to-change-their-mind\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Economic Forum,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than 25 percent of the workforce will be composed of Gen Z employees by 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that the younger generation is stepping into the job landscape, workplace expectations are shifting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideal occupation for Gen Zers prioritizes flexibility, well-being, decent pay, independence and social impact. Many of these values are regurgitated through company advertisements and motivational speeches given by billionaires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the belief that today\u2019s young people are lazy and unprofessional has made some employers skeptical about hiring Gen Z adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumebuilder.com\/1-in-3-hiring-managers-say-its-beneficial-to-avoid-hiring-gen-z-senior-candidates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by Resume Builder, an online platform that offers resources for job seekers, found that 36 percent of employers were biased against candidates between the ages of 18 and 27.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I disagree with the sentiment that Gen Z workers are \u201cuncooperative\u201d and don\u2019t want to work. Young people today are facing challenges that older generations didn\u2019t encounter, such as a worsening economy and vast competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing Gen Z has made clear is their distaste for working dead-end jobs. As a result, job-hopping and remote work have become popular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/research\/freelance-forward-2023-research-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the American freelancing platform Upwork found that 52 percent of Gen Z job seekers are opting for freelance work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/08\/economy\/office-space-vacancies-hit-a-record-high\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is more office space for more corporate jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet instead of leaving it for younger people, companies are decreasing staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Z is also grappling with mental health struggles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/sustainable-inclusive-growth\/future-of-america\/how-does-gen-z-see-its-place-in-the-working-world-with-trepidation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by McKinsey &amp; Company, an American strategy and management consulting firm, reports that approximately 55 percent of 18-24 year olds were diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Gen Z college graduates, the COVID-19 pandemic also made it difficult to obtain work experience through internships and entry level positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gen-z-faces-a-tough-labor-market-students-graduates-university-job-unemployment-law-internship-work-experience-8f3135f5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opinion piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nathan Biller, a graduate from Colgate University, expresses his frustration. \u201cWe finish college now with a diploma in hand, but lacking the real-world experience and credentials for which employers look,\u201d Biller said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s unclear what the solution to this problem is. Most of our generation is still in high school, so we are left to cope with the present state of affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the job landscape is evolving and soon\u2014we will be in charge. Companies should make an effort to engage Gen Z because they are the next generation of workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, young people possess skills that can be assets to companies in our technology-driven society, such as tech-savviness, creativity and diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world will not stop moving because we disagree on how working should be.
